Why is a Home Improvement reboot not likely? Tim Allen reveals cast challenges

A potential Home Improvement reboot still seems unlikely after Tim Allen discussed the obstacles involving the original cast.

Speaking to Us Weekly, the actor said that the reboot is hard to make right now, as “the boys” have personality conflicts and their individual issues, which are creating a problem to working together and moving the project forward at the moment.

The sitcom started in 1991 and ran for eight seasons, ending in 1999. It starred Tim Allen as Tim Taylor, Patricia Richardson as Jill Taylor, Earl Hindman as Wilson Wilson, Jr., Taran Noah Smith as Mark Taylor, Zachery Ty Bryan as Brad Taylor, and Richard Karn as Al Borland.

After the success of the series, many fans wondered if a reboot could happen in the near future. However, from Tim Allen’s recent comments, it doesn’t look like plans for a reboot are progressing.

During an interview with Us Weekly held in June 2026, Tim Allen, who played Tim Taylor in Home Improvement, was asked about the updates on the Home Improvement reboot. Answering the question, he said:

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys.”

Allen added that the cast is dealing with their own personal problems, and while he liked the idea of focusing the story on them, it is difficult to do so at the moment. The actor didn’t take any names specifically.

Tim last appeared in the TV series titled Shifting Gears as Matt. Cast member, Taran Noah Smith, was last seen in the podcast episode of The Best Show with Tom Scharpling, released last year. As for Zachery Ty Bryan, he was last seen in The Guardians of Justice (Will Save You!).

Earlier this year, in February, Bryan received a sixteen-month prison sentence. Since he had fifty-seven days of credit and did not receive probation, his jail time came down to a bit over fourteen months. The case goes back to a 2024 arrest in La Quinta, California, where he was charged with DUI and contempt of court. Additionally, he has also faced multiple arrests, including DUI charges, probation violations, and domestic violence cases in the past.

Patricia Richardson revealed during the Back to the Best podcast that Allen talking openly about the Home Improvement reboot sounded weird to her, considering he never asked her or Jonathan Taylor Thomas. She revealed calling Jonathan to ask him whether he received any call from Tim Allen, and he also said he hadn’t been asked and found it strange that he was saying everyone was on board without speaking to them.

Speaking of Home Improvement Reboot and the original cast members, she added:

“Zachery is now a felon. Taran hasn’t acted since he left the show, he’s not an actor anymore. Jonathan’s not really interested in acting, he wants to direct and write. And we don’t have Wilson.”

Richardson continued that the Home Improvement reboot wouldn’t feel the same without the original cast. She added that everyone has changed over the years, so it can’t just go back to how it was before.
