Derek blocked Grayson’s clinic comeup

Here’s what went down Monday, April 20, 2026 on Beyond the Gates when Nosy Barbie got a new accessory, Chelsea wasn’t into throwbacks, and Izaiah may have a rival for Eva.

What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Andre seemed to have avoided Dani by working on a project at his condo overnight. Dani wanted to know why Andre had gotten in Bill’s face about his calling her “baby,” since she knew Andre wasn’t insecure. Andre said he hadn’t purposely sought out Bill, but when he saw him at the club, he knew words had to be spoken. Bill and Hayley had Dani stuck in their heads, Andre added.

Satisfied that she and Andre were good, Dani changed the topic to her idea about working Tatum Stewart’s runway while carrying a ChelseaKat purse. She called Chelsea, who was wrapping up a convo with Naomi; after Naomi wouldn’t open up about what was bothering her, she read between Chelsea’s lines and decided there was someone she could confide in. Chelsea found Dani all excited about the purse idea, but Chelsea shut her down so hard that Dani had to act like she wasn’t flattened by it. Not only did Chelsea not want to dilute ChelseaKat’s branding, but she also liked where she and Dani were now that they weren’t working together. (Ouch!)

Later, Andre comforted Dani, who allowed herself to be sad that she couldn’t work with Chelsea the way Bill was now working with Naomi. So this was a competition?

Strange relationship

Joey saw that Vanessa was chipper since making up with bestie Nicole. Van observed that Joey didn’t have any friends, but he liked it that way. Then, Leslie, who was at Uptown waiting for Marcel, got a call from her date asking to change their venue to the casino. When Joey was notified that the couple was working the tables, Vanessa’s curiosity got the better of her, and she sent Joey out to talk to Marcel so she could have a private chat with Leslie.

Leslie was certain she was being recorded when Vanessa called her in to the back room to talk about clinic business and how things were going between her and Marcel. Vanessa got Leslie to admit that Marcel had just signed his divorce papers and wanted to celebrate, plunking down money at the casino because he’d had to dip into his retirement money to satisfy his ex-wife’s demands. Leslie knew that Vanessa hated her and couldn’t understand why she wanted to know if she and Marcel were happy. Vanessa noted, however, that both she and Leslie had being with “unlikely partners” in common, which made Leslie open up.

She had always been a “nagging critter” to Alan, Leslie revealed, and Ted had always treated her as a dirty secret. Leslie seemed vulnerable as she went on say that Marcel had actually chosen her, and Vanessa said she was glad Leslie had that in him. Once Leslie left, Vanessa told Joey that her chat with Leslie had been “surprisingly not awful,” but Joey was annoyed that Vanessa had tried to engineer a friendship between him and Marcel by forcing them into a situation together. “Nosy Barbie,” like Leslie called her, probably wouldn’t be so eager if she knew Joey and Marcel already knew each other, and that Marcel had been the one to unalive Doug on Joey’s orders, right?

Smitty met Jacob at his motel room and saw his friend and associate wincing in pain. Jacob showed Smitty the extensive bruising he’d sustained from Ren’s beating and pleaded with Smitty to back out of doing his exposé. Smitty scoffed that maybe Jacob should walk away from the case instead, since at least he was getting results – he showed Jacob intel he’d been able to get from a contact at the courthouse regarding Grayson’s co-worker Rachel Lewis, who had her record of auto theft scrubbed from her rap sheet. Jacob had already run a check on Rachel and come up empty. How come everyone – Kat several times over, now Smitty – is a better detective than Detective Jacob?

Grayson swaggered by Ashley at the hospital, with her noticing that he’d split her apartment before she’d woken up. He gave her an excuse about going running, then stunned her by asking for Derek’s phone number. Ashley was surprised to learn that Grayson wanted to volunteer at the free clinic, lying that it would look good regarding the managerial position he was hoping to apply for. Of course, it was only because of Lia’s pressuring that he was even “interested.”

At Orphey Gene’s, Derek was going over clinic updates with Eva, sticking his foot in his mouth when the subject of Leslie seeing Marcel came up; Derek couldn’t believe that a cop was dating a criminal. Eva growled that Leslie hadn’t been charged with anything and that only she had the right to criticize her mother. Gee, Eva, you know Leslie tried to kill Laura not once but twice. Isn’t that aiding and abetting?

Derek nearly had to check that he’d picked up the right phone when Grayson called him about putting in some hours at the clinic. After Derek said Grayson wasn’t qualified, Grayson said he was willing to stock supplies or do whatever else was needed, and Grayson’s eagerness made Derek suspicious. Derek hung up, but when Eva found out that he had turned away a volunteer, she said that the clinic could use everyone they could get – and Grayson sleeping with Derek’s ex-fiancée wasn’t enough reason to tell him to bounce. Is anybody else picking up on vibes between Eva and Derek? Watch out, Izaiah!

Naomi went to Ashley to talk about how worried she was about Jacob. Ashley offered to take her break with her bestie, but when Grayson announced that Derek had prevented him from volunteering, Ashley dragged Naomi to the diner and had it out with Derek over why he had shut Grayson out. Though Derek tried to tell Ashley that the clinic was full up on volunteers, he finally admitted that he just didn’t trust Grayson’s “sketchy boyfriend” – especially not after Grayson had wandered off by himself while touring the clinic, as if he were casing the place. Derek also cited Grayson’s odd timing, but Ashley deemed Derek jealous and claimed it was just a way of trying to win her back. Ashley, honey – you and Derek were so not even all that. Though she was right when she flamed him for his hypocrisy in lying about his paralysis being healed!

At Garland, Jacob limped into the elevator and stopped it once Grayson got on, demanding to know why Grayson hadn’t returned any of his calls. Grayson whimpered that he’d been warned not to make any more mistakes; Jacob scoffed that he’d received his own warning – but that the faster they acted, the faster they could bust up the ring and move on with their lives. Grayson saw the point and grudgingly agreed to look into Rachel Lewis, as Smitty had suggested. No wonder Jacob is so anxious – he’s probably super over having to hang out in that alley!

Tune in tomorrow when the specter of “Kenneth” and his brother again hangs over Martin’s political career, and Tomás looks to get some useful information about Lynette, as Hayley continues scrambling to make her wrongdoings go bye-bye.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
