Get ready to be hit by a wave of nostalgia, for the first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series is finally here and it is already very obvious that this is not a remake. It is a more nuanced, in-depth and holistic re-telling of J.K. Rowling’s novels, which will be different from the films in many ways, particularly in terms of the additional emotional beats and quieter character moments that the movies could not afford. Dudley’s bullying and Petunia’s cruel words hit harder
Probably one of the most uncomfortable additions in the upcoming Harry Potter series as featured in the trailer, is a longer glimpse at Harry’s life prior to Hogwarts. We see Dudley making fun of him at school and not only at home, which leaves Harry feeling even more lonely. Another agonising scene is when Aunt Petunia cuts Harry’s hair rather roughly and almost what seems like a punishment, as she tells him, “There is nothing special about you.”
It is a small scene, yet it provides a veritable emotional background. The movies depicted the Dursley family’s apathy towards their nephew Harry, but this one brings out the psychological atrocities more vividly. Due to that, the subsequent happiness and awe experienced by Harry will feel rather well-deserved, not merely a mere stroke of luck.
Hagrid and Harry’s first meeting feels bigger in the new Harry Potter series
We have been introduced to Hagrid previously in the Harry Potter movies, but never in such a manner. The first encounter between Hagrid and Harry is much more heartwarming and playful. There is even a scene where Hagrid plays snow, probably what looks like he’s making a snow angel, which is particularly endearing and childish.
This little glimpse reveals much about him. He is not just a big giant, he is kind and gentle and benevolent. It also renders his relationship with Harry more natural. Rather than merely depicting the wizarding world, the series showcases how Hagrid is the first emotional connection that Harry makes in it.
Harry watching Molly hug Ron
A very sombre and poignant scene depicts Harry, as he sits on the Hogwarts Express, looking out the window and sees Molly hugging Ron, before the train leaves for Hogwarts. One can easily overlook it, yet the moment feels heavy without saying a word.
Harry is not merely excited but he is seeing something that he has never experienced in his life, a warm family moment. The Harry Potter movies did not really take a pause to showcase scenes as this, but the series does. It indirectly brings out his loneliness through just a simple glance. The little detail gives it an emotional dimension and makes his subsequent relationship with the Weasleys even more unique.
A longer, more emotional Hogwarts Express journey
The Hogwarts Express journey seems more detailed and lengthy in the trailer. It does not hurry, but presents intimate moments, little chats and creates a feeling of anticipation. This is where the famous trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet each other for the first time, but little did they know that they would become the best of friends embarking on deadly adventures in the future.
It is also important since it marks Harry’s transition from his former life to a new magical chapter. The series portrays that change by slowing it a notch, to add more emotional impact. It is not a mere train ride, but the beginning of a new life, where friendships are formed and magic gradually creeps in.
New glimpses of Hogwarts life beyond classes
HBO’s Harry Potter trailer offers fans what they have always desired: a sneak peak of the mundane life at Hogwarts. We find the students walking through the corridors, having meals together and simply spending time in the castle.
This version is more attentive to the atmosphere, unlike the films that paid much attention to the main story. It renders Hogwarts real and alive and not just a backdrop. These little details are indications that the show will dive deeper into the themes of friendship, everyday lives and what it really means to live and study magic at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
