Vince Gilligan reveals BTS moments of Pluribus Episode 6; talks Easter Eggs

Pluribus Episode 6 left the audience shocked. Calling it an understatement would be fair, thanks to the surprising Easter Egg. In a blink-and-you-miss moment, Vince Gilligan made a surprising cameo on his hit sci-fi Apple TV series as a frozen severed head. Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn, who portrays the role of Carol Sturka on the series, sat down for a Behind The Scenes interview with Apple TV. When Seehorn asked the creator about the process behind making the moment, Gilligan said,

“It was wonderfully non-invasive. Because in the old days, if you wanted your head in a TV show as a prop, they would have to cast it. Nowadays, Joe Ulibarri came in. This guy’s a genius. He creates amazing props and whatnot. He came in and he had me stand still, just outside my office. No special lighting or anything. And he wandered around me with this thing, and it was some lidar scanner, and they scanned my head. And then he made the prop… And then he 3D printed me a little version of my head, as a bust…It’s really cool.

Vince Gilligan’s Easter Egg moment in Pluribus Episode 6

Apple TV’s Pluribus is one of the more thought-provoking and discussed shows currently streaming. The series follows Carol Sturka (played by Rhea Seehorn) as she tries to navigate through the strange new world where everyone shares a hive mind and are exceedingly courteous. In previous episode titled ‘Got Milk’, Carol is left alone in the city, when she uncovers that the people have been consuming a strange liquid in milk cartons. Her investigation into it takes her to a sketchy warehouse, where she makes a startling discovery.

In Pluribus episode 6 titled ‘HDP’, we see Carol at a refrigerated warehouse of a mysterious facility called Agri-Jet in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the warehouse she finds chopped up human body parts wrapped up in vacuum seals on shelves. She is shocked and shaken. She will bring her camera to record the place as she tries to make sense of it all. Carol will pick up one of the decapitated heads, which holds a strong resemblance to the maker of the show, as she remarks,

“That is not a Buttterball turkey. I’ll tell you that much.”

Gilligan credits Joe Ulibarri for the Pluribus Episode 6 moment, who helped capture his likeness through 3D printing. It is interesting to note that this is the first time Vince Gilligan has appeared in one of his shows. While addressing the unexpected moment, Gilligan quipped,

“… I don’t think I was ever in Breaking Bad. I was never in Better Call Saul. I have never done the Hitchcockian cameo until episode six of Pluribus, where my severed frozen head appears on the show. And you (Rhea Seehorn) get to cradle it lovingly…”

In Pluribus Episode 6, Carol finds out that the severed body parts are used to make protein for the people to consume. The title of the episode ‘HDP’, stands for ‘Human Derived Protein’. The same episode also had a surprising cameo from John Cena, as he appears in an infomercial.

Pluribus Episode 6 is currently streaming on Apple TV.
