This now iconic The Boys Season 4 episode was originally scrapped by Prime Video reveals Eric Kripke

The Boys is one of the few shows that isn’t afraid to push boundaries. The Prime Video series is known to be a vicious parody of superhero culture, full of outrageous plot twists, and scenes that frequently go beyond most mainstream television. However, even a show that is popular for taking bold creative risks can have its limitations, particularly from the streaming executives.

In a shocking twist, the creator of The Boys, Eric Kripke, claimed that one of the most memorable episodes of the fourth season was nearly cut out completely by Amazon Prime. The episode which is now regarded by the fans as a significant part of the season almost did not make it to the screen.

According to Kripke’s conversation with Polygon, it was a really stressful state of affairs among the team. They had to vigorously justify one of the bold creative decisions of the show. In the end, the disagreement was resolved and the episode was allowed to air.

In retrospect, it is shocking that such an important episode nearly faded. The narrative highlights how the battles behind-the-scenes can be creative enough to influence the TV shows that the audiences will watch in the future.

A “stressful 24 hours” behind the scenes

We may have witnessed the action and shocking turns in The Boys, but there’s also significant drama behind the scenes. A single episode in Season 4, Episode 8 to be precise, initially titled “Assassination Run” was almost cancelled by Showrunner Eric Kripke after bringing up concerns at Amazon. The streaming giant feared it would spark additional controversy following the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on the U.S. President Donald Trump.

Kripke claimed that he experienced a “stressful 24 hours” when the platform was deciding whether they should proceed with the episode, because it was pushing the limits of the show even to a greater extent than it does most of the time. In an interview with Polygon, Eric Kripke stated:

“It created a lot of anxiety because I directed that one. I had a lot of emotional eggs in that basket, and there was a very real possibility that they were going to delay its airing. It went all the way up the chain to Andy Jassy, the head of Amazon, and he was okay with airing it.

All that came back was, ‘Just change the title. It’s a tasteless title considering, but it’s different enough, and we will back it.’ Thank God that they did. I had a really stressful 24 hours, but it all pales in comparison to the madness in the real world.”

Even with the shocking content of the series, the series must operate within the boundaries of a major streaming platform. Following deliberations, Kripke defended the creative vision of the episode and it was finally approved to air with only the title being changed to: “Season Four Finale.”

Why the The Boys Season 4 Episode 8 was so controversial

Controversy is not something new for The Boys. The show is characterized by the outrageous scenes and its cynical approach to celebrity culture, politics, and the underbelly of superhero fame. But there was this one episode in Season 4 that had taken it too far for the executives to have thought about canceling it briefly.

Although the show frequently relied on graphic scenes and unapologetic satire, the very plot in the final episode of The Boys Season 4 pushed the platform to the edge of what a major streaming service could handle. The episode shows Homelander secretly orchestrating a plan to eliminate elected President Robert Singer, something which could’ve triggered massive outrage if people related it with Trump’s attempted assassination that occurred only a few days before its airing date.

The episode was heavily defended by showrunner Eric Kripke, who felt it was a necessity for the tone and plot of the season. By taking it off, he thought, he would have taken away a scene that best epitomized the anarchic essence of The Boys. Eventually, the episode remained, and it became one of the most memorable moments in Season 4.
