The 118 band together to save Chimney’s job

9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16 titled ‘Where There’s Smoke‘ aired on ABC on April 2. The latest episode of the firefighter procedural began with an unusually high number of 911 calls from the same building. The tenants were complaining about electrical issues, wiring, the smoke detector and even smelling smoke. Each time, Chimney and the 118 were on the scene, doing their job and checking the building but they could not find anything. While they were short of one man (Buck), Chimney had called in a floater named Sam to fill in for him.

Chimney made sure the 118 had checked every nook and corner of the building but to no success. Things took a turn for the 118 in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16, when one of the apartments in the building caught fire and the firehouse was called into question. As Chimney’s job is threatened, the 118 come together to find the cause behind the fire.

Here is the complete 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16 recap.

Chimney and the 118 are under scrutiny in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16

After repeated calls, one of the apartments in the building in question finally caught fire. While Chimney and the 118 managed to get everyone out, the people were angry about their belongings. Since most of their life and houses went up in flames, the angry mob directed their frustration towards the 118, creating a panic situation. The event escalated to such a height that the police had to intervene. In the midst of this chaos, Chimney noticed the building manager, Roman, going inside the burning building in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16. Chimney despised the man because he had pushed Ravi earlier, forcing the 118 Captain to push him in return. Chimney was quick to follow Roman into the burning building but he had already suffered fourth-degree burns on his body. Chimney carried him over and brought him out, charging through the angry crowd.

Later in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16, Chimney and the 118 were called for a review board meeting, asking them to retrace their steps from the call. Things took a serious turn when Buck’s replacement revealed that Chimney had punched the building manager, leading the investigators to believe that Chimney was frustrated during the call. The review board called out Chimney’s leadership, blaming him for the recent 118 disasters, from Eddie almost jumping off a bridge during a rescue to Hen’s health scare and Buck’s recent addiction.

The 118 decodes the reason behind the fire in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16

It was only a matter of time before Buck learned that Chimney and the 118 were in trouble in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16 and he was back into action. He teamed up with Eddie and Ravi to investigate the location of the calls. Once Maddie gave them access, they discovered that all calls were being made from the southeast corner of the building. When Eddie claimed that he had not found anything in the basement, May and Harry came to the rescue, having managed to get their hands on the original plans, thanks to their father’s architect connections. May revealed that the building has a secret room, hidden by a concrete wall.

Things took a turn in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 16 when the 118 returned to the building, only to find a group of migrants trapped in the secret room, by Roman, who was likely a human trafficker. The migrants were in bad shape, with one boy suffering from an infection. The group claimed they were the ones making calls but when no help came, one of them took matters too far and set fire to the place. Unfortunately, the 118 could not hear them during the initial inspection.

In the final moments, the group was admitted to the hospital with Athena and Detective Hooks being called on the case. While Hooks maintained that all evidence against Roman went up in flames, Hen suggested using the migrants’ testimony. However, Hooks was seen making a suspicious call to a stranger, suggesting that he is likely a corrupt officer. Sam eventually apologized to Chimeny for making matters worse for him at the review board meeting. Chimney forgave Sam but he was placed with the 144 as Buck was back with his 118 family.
