It seems that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a global hit, as the series has climbed up to the top of the Netflix charts. The series debuted last Thursday on the streaming giant. Haley Z. Boston is the creator and showrunner of the horror series. But it’s the EPs of the Netflix series, which have fans check the show out. The executive producers of the show are none other than the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things.
The series is headlined by Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco, which follows a young couple, Nicky (DiMarco) and Rachel (Morrone), a week before their wedding. Netflix described the series like this in a press release last week:
“Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is an atmospheric horror series that follows a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated wedding. And, obviously, it’s not a spoiler to say that not everything goes right with the nuptials. The series comes from executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer and Hilary Leavitt via their Upside Down Pictures overall deal with Netflix. Haley Z. Boston will serve as showrunner and executive producer.”
The Stranger Things creator told Netflix regarding the Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen‘s script:
“We were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script. She is a major new talent with a singular voice — her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just … very Haley. We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.”
Why is Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is such a huge hit?
Netflix marketed Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen under the Duffer Brothers’ name. While Haley Z. Boston has been credited as the showrunner and creator, the Duffer Brothers’ involvement has been the highlight. But over time, people found the horror series relatable, as we have heard more and more, the internet is filled with stories about the not-so-glamorous side of marriage. In an interview with Tudum, Haley Z. Boston said:
“When I was a kid, my mom said to me, ‘You just need to make sure you don’t marry the wrong person. The show is about the fear of marrying the wrong person. I’ve been to weddings where people say in their vows, ‘I never once had a doubt.’ I hear that, and I’m like, ‘That’s crazy. What do you mean?’ ”
In an interview with Variety, Boston also spoke about how the Duffer Brothers helped in making Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen:
“Their whole message was, ‘This is your show. It’s your vision. It’s an original idea. We will help protect that. You need to protect that. Don’t let all of the noise in because you are working on this show for so long, and there are so many different creative voices coming in. You’ve got the writers, the producers and then directors come in, and the actors, and all the department heads. It’s incredible to have those different perspectives, but if you lose yourself, you lose the plot. You have to follow a North Star and remember what the show is, and take the creative ideas from others that serve that or change it in a way that you think is better or more interesting.’”
She further continued:
“I was really struggling with a specific mythology point, and there were a lot of people who didn’t agree with me or think that that’s the direction the show should go in. I called the Duffers and asked, ‘What do I do? I don’t want to f**k this up. This is my first time doing this.’ They were really great: ‘Haley, you have to believe in every creative decision you make. If you don’t believe in it, don’t do it, and we’ll support you.’ That was incredible. And they pushed for me to be the sole showrunner, which was great and also incredibly challenging.”
