Oscars 100th anniversary date is now official

The Academy confirmed 2027 and 2028 ceremony dates before a historic move to YouTube in 2029.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed the dates for the next two editions of Hollywood’s most celebrated night, setting the stage for what will be one of the most anticipated milestone events in the history of the awards. The 99th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2027, and the 100th ceremony will follow on Sunday, March 5, 2028. Both will air live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood beginning at 4 p.m. local time, reaching audiences across more than 200 territories worldwide.

The announcement carries added significance because both ceremonies will be among the final editions to air on ABC before the show transitions to a new broadcast home. Starting with the 101st ceremony in 2029, the Oscars will move to YouTube, a shift that marks a generational change in how one of entertainment’s most storied institutions reaches its audience.

A venue change to match the era shift

The move to YouTube will also coincide with a change of address. Beginning in 2029, the ceremony will relocate from the Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the event for years in the heart of Hollywood, to the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The combination of a new broadcaster and a new venue signals that the Academy is deliberately using the post-centennial period to reposition the show for a changing media landscape.

The 100th ceremony in 2028 will arrive as the final edition of the ABC era, making it a natural endpoint for one chapter and the threshold of another. For an event that has spent a century anchoring the Hollywood calendar, the timing is anything but accidental.

The road to the 99th ceremony

For those already looking ahead to the 2027 race, the eligibility window is open. Films released from January 1, 2026 onward will be considered for the 99th ceremony. Nominations voting is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with the official nominees announced later that month. Final voting will close in early March, just days before the ceremony.

What the 98th Oscars’ ceremony looked like

The most recent edition of the awards offered a glimpse of the storytelling that will define the road ahead. The 98th Oscars, held in March of this year, saw one film claim the top prize along with five additional awards. The evening’s most-nominated film made history with 16 nominations, a record for any production, and delivered a best actor win for its lead. A British actress claimed best actress for her portrayal in a period literary adaptation.

Those results now belong to the growing archive of a ceremony preparing to mark its 100th year, a milestone that Hollywood, for all its reinvention, has rarely had the occasion to celebrate.
