Invincible Season 4 makes a huge change to a character’s story, and it makes complete sense

Prime Video’s Invincible Season 4 has strayed away from its adaptation in this one sense, and unlike other changes, this one makes complete sense. The show has finally reached the Viltrumite War arc, and in doing so, it’s made a smart change to a beloved character that sets them apart from their source material in exactly the right way.

We are now reaching a point where the show’s heroes face off against the nearly extinct Viltrum Empire. It’s a high-stakes conflict that demands exceptionally powerful warriors, and that’s where Tech Jacket comes in. The character fights alongside other heroes against Viltrumites who are essentially as strong as Superman, making this one of the series’ biggest battles yet.

In the original comics, we see how Tech Jacket is Zack Thompson, a teenage boy with shapeshifting armor created by the Geldarian race. It’s an elegant setup: the Geldarians are technologically advanced but physically weak, so they built armor that bonds to a user’s body and generates weapons from pure imagination. Since humans are bigger and stronger than Geldarians, Zack becomes an even more powerful version of the tech. but in the show, Zach is replaced by a female Tech Jacket, Zoe.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Robert Kirkman has spoken about the gender swap where he said,

“When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I realized that if we had brought him straight to comics, he’d be very similar to Mark. We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character.”

The change although drastic is a clever one as Zoe distinguishes the Tech Jacket from Mark Grayson and balances the Viltrumite War’s all-male comic roster. Best of all, it’s approved by Robert Kirkman.
