Hopkins is impressed with Kidd in Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 17
Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 17 begins with a call about a fire at a surgery centre. While Hopkins stayed behind, Kidd led the call and managed to evacuate the building, including the patient who was in the middle of surgery and the nurse monitoring him. After the call, Hopkins is impressed with Kidd’s leadership and her squad’s hard work and praises them. As Kidd is filling out the incident report in her office, she receives a suspicious call from a woman asking her to investigate the fire at the surgery centre, which she believes was deliberately set. Kidd teams up with Hopkins to investigate it as a possible arson case and they agree to start with the nurse and rope in the OFI.
Elizabeth, the nurse from the surgery centre, was a dead end in Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 17 as she had not made the call. However, she revealed that she had heard rumours about negligence with safety protocols at the centre, which could have started the fire. Elizabeth’s claims prove true when Captain Hargrave finds a charred sink pipe, suggesting the fire was started from a chemical reaction. Both Kidd and Hargrave arrive at the centre’s janitor’s house and the former recognizes his wife’s voice from the mysterious woman on the phone. The janitor confesses that he was offered money from Helix, a large corporation, to set the fire but he refused.
Kidd eventually realizes that it is none other than Elizabeth who started the fire and is now trying to divert their attention to the janitor. Once she involves the OFI, Elizabeth and the members at Helix are arrested. As Hopkins praises Kidd’s arson investigation skills, she gives all credit to Severide, who had been a great teacher.

In the final moments of the episode, he hands an internal affairs review form for Severide to Lucy and asks her to take it to the IA. While Lucy is hesitant, she has no choice. However, she takes a quick peek inside the file, which suggests that Hopkins is reporting Severide for “dereliction of duty,” by likely using his involvement in arson investigations (especially of Van Meter’s) with the OFI.
