Hacks Season 5 stars tease a “shocking” finale fans won’t see coming, here’s all about it

Hacks fans get ready, as the journey is coming to an end. On April 9, the fifth and final season of this series will arrive exclusively on HBO Max. Last year, on April 10, season 4 premiered. After a year, the fans broke their patience level and were waiting to see Deborah, who found her fighting spirit again at the season 4 finale. Hacks Season 4 ended with a punchline from Deborah to Ava. The punchline:

“We’re going home. That will not be my legacy. I’m no quitter. We have some rewriting to do.”

Then the screen fades to black. Season 5 will begin with the return of Deborah to America. She is ready to shape her own story as well as protect her legacy.

Deadline spoke with Hannah Einbinder, Jean Smart, and the showrunners Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs to talk about what lies ahead for Deborah and Ava and how the story will end. Einbinder shared that there were many tears while wrapping up the series. Aniello admits that she has been crying every day.

Hacks season 5: Jean Smart reveals the new season’s ending script

At the start of Hacks season 5, Deborah and Ava return from their troubled trip to Singapore, which was shown in season 4. Things have not been easy, and Deborah lost her dream talk show after a live TV disaster. Now, the two are set to try for a comeback. The big question is how Hannah and Jean felt when they first read the scripts and saw how the story ends.

Jean Smart, who is popular for the role of Deborah Vance, shared her story with Deadline regarding her script. She said,

“I don’t remember ever picturing or even imagining an ending. I knew that it was going to be pretty much five seasons from the beginning, but I didn’t ask. I just was like, I’ll be surprised. When I did find out at first, I was shocked and unsure about how I felt because it was not remotely anything I could have imagined. But then I realized, no, it’ll work because they’re writing it and they’re amazing. And so I went, ‘OK.”

The production team teases Hacks fans

On Deadline, Lucia Aniello, the showrunner, director, and writer of Hacks, teases her fans and said,

“This one, it’s for the fans. If you’re somebody who’s seen this show, then we finish it for them.”

Jen Stasky, another co-creator, showrunner, and writer of this show, shared about season 5’s ending.

“In this final season, what we’re so excited for people to see is we get to do so many stories that we’ve been really waiting and wanting to do, but it just wasn’t quite right in earlier seasons, or it felt like we needed the relationship between Ava and Deborah deepen before we did it. So that was just one of the storylines that we knew would be funny, but also really sexy and real and grounded and important to show that, yeah, why wouldn’t these two get together?”

Aniello also added,

“I think our actors are operating on another level in this episode. Jean and Hannah, of course, but also Jimmy (Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) are so, so good in this last episode. Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins) has really beautiful moments in it. This one, it’s for the fans. If you’re somebody who’s seen this show, then we finish it for them. So I really hope it’s… I would say really satisfying, but obviously that’s my opinion.”
