Here’s what went down on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, on Beyond the Gates when every seat Hayley sat on was hot, Deanna knew what time it was, and Ted navigated the newness with Shanice.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Joey was surprised to see Eva, who wanted to thank the casino owner for offering Izaiah a lifeline during his troubled youth. Joey didn’t want credit, but Eva noted how he hadn’t written off a Black boy like many others would have. Eva also felt that Joey’s intervention was now extending to the students Izaiah was helping at Banneker University. Joey recalled how he’d seen that Izaiah had deserved better than a life of crime, and Eva could tell that Joey was proud of him.
I like the way you work it

At the country club, Naomi ran into Kat, who explained how Hayley suddenly considered Tomás “public enemy number one.” Kat wanted advice from Naomi as to how she handled her former best friend; Naomi was still angry that she had been played and learned from Kat that Hayley had become awfully chummy with Lynette, a client. “They’re two peas in a sketchy-ass pod,” Kat sniffed, and Naomi concurred that something was off, especially since Hayley was making a mission of targeting Tomás.
Joey cajoled Hayley into stopping by the casino, where he told her that Bill had asked him to dig for information concerning Lynette. Hayley denied Joey’s theory that her mugging had never happened, and that she was running some kind of scam with “Sammy.” Joey observed that every gambler’s winning streak came to an end, and he was curious to see what hand Hayley would play once hers did.
Later, Hayley was startled when Naomi approached her at Orphey Gene’s. Naomi mentioned Hayley’s out-of-nowhere vendetta against Tomás and reported that nothing sketchy had come up about him when she had represented Tomás’s co-workers during the sexual harassment suit against the firm. Hayley continued to insist that Tomás was a predator, and when she refused to back off her attacks on the junior partner, Naomi brought up how she had never said anything to anyone about the sonogram Hayley had never had; Naomi implied that she would bust Hayley if she didn’t leave Tomás alone.
Caught out there

Deanna demanded to know if Vanessa had gotten involved with Joey before or after Doug had died. Despite Vanessa’s adamance to the contrary, Deanna huffed that her mom had thrown her affair with “bottom-feeding hustler” Joey in Doug’s face and hadn’t even gotten Doug help for his gambling addiction. Vanessa swore she had only begun seeing Joey after becoming a widow, but Deanna didn’t believe her, not appreciating Donnell and Vanessa’s ambush and stomping out. Donnell comforted Vanessa, who reeled from Deanna saying that Vanessa made her sick.
Eva came across Donnell at the country club, where they discussed Doug’s death and Deanna’s reaction. Donnell felt lost in his role as the new man of the house and didn’t know how to referee his mother and sister. As Eva suggested that Donnell confide in Izaiah, Kat arrived and sniffed that Eva was cavorting with her friend. When Eva had to clarify that she and Izaiah weren’t engaged, Kat accused Eva of editing the truth, but Eva took it in stride and made her way out.
Donnell updated Kat about Vanessa’s relationship with Joey. He wanted to believe that it hadn’t developed until after his father died, but it was hard to deny the signs indicating otherwise. Kat understood what it was like to have family history rewritten and how traumatic it was, based on her own experience, though she reminded Donnell that the love the McBrides had shared had been real. Donnell arrived at the opinion that Doug had probably known about Joey and Vanessa while he was alive.
Saving all my love for you

Carlton visited Nicole’s office to firm up plans for their double date with Vanessa and Joey. Neither were thrilled about the idea of breaking bread with Armstrong, but they resigned themselves to the evening. After Carlton left, Nicole saw that Kial was trying to call her; she reluctantly let it go to voicemail.
“You love me?” Shanice asked after Ted pointed out a personality trait he loved about her. When Ted backtracked, Shanice became convinced that Ted was indeed rebounding from Nicole. Ted vowed that Shanice wasn’t the other woman to him like Leslie had been, but Shanice didn’t want to fool herself about what her relationship with Ted was or wasn’t. Although Ted beseeched Shanice to see past his mistakes, Shanice couldn’t handle more of the conversation and left his hotel room.
Once back on duty at the hospital, Shanice defended herself to Carlton, who faulted her for creating competition by introducing Nicole to Kial. Carlton was certain that Nicole would ultimately choose him, but Shanice could see through his bravado.
Eva met with Ted, who was still processing his tussle with Shanice. Eva remembered how guarded she had been with Izaiah at first, as he had just had his heart stomped on by Yolanda. She went on to say that it had been Izaiah’s smaller gestures that had helped establish trust and allowed Eva’s own heart to heal, which inspired Ted.
Ted found Shanice and said that he wanted to put in the work so that they could learn to trust each other. He clarified that he was taking things slow with her not from a lack of interest, but because he didn’t want to screw things up. Shanice shared that their connection seemed too good to be true, yet she felt soothed when Ted revealed that he was excited to see where their relationship took them.
At Uptown, waiting for Nicole and Carlton to arrive, Vanessa was still shellshocked that Deanna had seen through her claim about not dating Joey until after Doug had died. Eventually, the two couples sat down together, but Joey immediately set Carlton on edge about how plastic surgeons were hacks who profited off other people’s addictions. Nicole empathized because Joey’s mother died during a procedure, though she called him out for making money from addicts himself. Vanessa closed her eyes as Joey verbally battled Carlton and Nicole, and when the waiter arrived, the foursome talked over each other in their need to order a drink.
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
