Beef Season 2 Episode 2 begins right where Episode 1 ends. It is established quite early in the new season that nobody is playing fair. Everyone wants to build their life, and they would just about do anything for that. Nobody is innocent anymore. Everyone is thinking about survival and status. This episode shows us how far they are willing to go to stay afloat. And for some reason, it all feels justified in their heads.
Beef Season 2 touches upon the idea that once you cross a line, it just gets easier to forget when to stop. Ashley and Austin walk into Josh and Lindsay’s house with a video of their fight. And this gives them an upper hand. But they are hardly concerned about the truth getting out. They think about reporting it, but they never really commit to the idea. They are more concerned with what they can get through that video. A better job, maybe, or control.
Beef Season 2 Episode 2 has tension simmering underneath every scene. Nobody can be trusted. Everybody is selfish in their own ways. Now, it is about who gets to win in a system where everyone is just scamming their way through it.
Beef Season 2 Episode 2: Blackmail
Austin and Ashley had been trying to stay out of the whole fight situation. But in this episode, they arrive at Josh and Lindsay’s house. They want to make a deal. Austin starts awkwardly by talking about Ashley’s position at the club, hoping she could be bumped up to a better one. At this point, Josh and Lindsay aren’t aware of the video yet. Lindsay is quick to say that Ashley could find herself a job at a motel or something, which is when Ashley decides to play her strongest card in this episode of Beef Season 2.
She shows the video to the couple, who immediately sit down and ask what they need to do for the video to disappear. The next scene shows Ashley delighted about being promoted, but Austin doesn’t seem to share the same level of joy. He feels overlooked. He just helped pull off something big and got nothing in return. He hoped they could have asked for more than just health insurance and paid leave for Ashley. Austin is unemployed, so he desperately needs something too. Ashley defends herself by saying that her cyst is the bigger concern here. And that’s what they got. Health insurance. That’s what matters for their future. Austin agrees, reluctantly.
Back at home, the couple discuss what to do about the whole situation now. Lindsay feels Ashley will start lording it over them. She proposes that Josh quit his job, they sell the house, take out a loan, and start afresh. Josh isn’t too sure about it. He goes ahead with Ashley’s promotion, thinking she wouldn’t hold it over them now that she has what she wants.
But Beef Season 2 Episode 2 proves Ashley is not to be underestimated. The next morning, she takes on the new role and, obviously, she struggles. It’s all a bit too much for her to handle. She deletes the video in front of Josh, but keeps it in the cloud so she can ask for more things, like an orientation session. Josh realizes his wife was right.
At the club, Beef shows how fragile Josh’s position is. He might be the general manager, but he is constantly reminded that he is not one of the elite members. When he hears that Chairwoman Park is already looking for his replacement, it hits a nerve. He even ends up losing money to Michael Phelps.
Things get worse in Beef Season 2 Episode 2 when Josh’s personal life adds to his stress. He gets a call from his sister about their late mother’s account, and we learn his finances are a mess. He has debts and guilt.
Meanwhile, his wife has been getting texts from Woosh, “the new tennis pro.” But soon she learns from her rich friends that he has been playing the same game with every woman at the club. Feeling insecure after they comment on her needing to amp up her skincare routine, Lindsay, seeking a little validation, unblocks Duke Desmond. He seems to have a huge crush on her. She sends him a filtered photo of herself, editing out her wrinkles, and now he’s desperate to meet her. But she thinks she can’t show up looking the way she does. So she decides to take that free lesson from Woosh, who offers her a deal on a Korean skin clinic. But it’s not a good enough deal for her. So, she blackmails him, of course, into paying for her cosmetic treatment.
Beef Season 2 Episode 2: All the schemes
Beef Season 2 has everyone playing their own little games. Even the beginners in the art of scheming are adapting fast. Ashley, now the MVP, slyly puts forth her fiancé as a potential PT for the club. But Chairwoman Park wants to try out a session before she confirms. However, the catch is that Austin is not a licensed physical therapist. But no worries, Ashley has a plan for that as well. She asks Austin to use a fake license to get the job.
Meanwhile, in the shed, Josh has his little “me-time.” It seems like he got his account reactivated. However, he regrets it again after post-n*t clarity and, as usual, goes for a run while listening to a podcast on self-improvement. But before he even begins, he stumbles and falls. A coyote then stares right at him from a distance.
Soon we learn Josh has decided to play the game too. Beef Season 2 Episode 2 makes his plan crystal clear. He wants to siphon money from the club through fake invoices tied to his mother’s name. But little does Ashley know that she is part of the process too.
Austin arrives at the Chairwoman’s rental home. He is, however, unsure about moving ahead with the fraud he is about to commit. Ashley reassures him that his license has been approved by Josh and, if anybody ever questions it, they always have the video to make things work in their favor again. Austin musters up the courage and goes in after the call.
Josh, on the other hand, is feeling quite positive about the whole buy-borrow-die loophole. He has sold off his stuff to pay back Michael Phelps and is already on a roll to begin again. He explains his plan to Lindsay, and soon the moment turns into a kiss.
Beef Season 2 Episode 2 ends on an unexpected note. Austin is waiting to meet Chairwoman Park, while she is on a call with the doctor we earlier saw, who is going to do Lindsay’s cosmetic treatment. And this is not even weird compared to what we see next. There is blood smeared on the doctor’s clothes, as a patient lies in front of him with a fatal cut on her face. It looks like he accidentally killed a patient during surgery.
This game they are all playing is way bigger than money or status. And Beef Season 2 is just getting started.
