Atlantic City woman, 20, indicted in brutal crash death

Deal, 20, is indicted after a drug-fueled NJ crash killed her passenger Shayniyah Reynolds

She was already known to local authorities before she ever crossed that center line. Taniya R. Deal, 20, of Atlantic City was indicted on April 14 by an Atlantic County grand jury on charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by automobile, stemming from a September 2025 crash in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, that killed her passenger and left another driver with serious injuries. An indictment is not proof of guilt.

The crash and what witnesses saw

The incident unfolded just before noon on September 4, 2025, at the intersection of Wrangleboro and Tilton roads, near Atlantic City International Airport. Deal was driving a 2008 Mercedes C300 east on Tilton Road when she drifted across the center line and struck a 2019 Toyota Tacoma head-on. A witness told authorities that Deal had crossed over the center line multiple times in the moments before the collision, while traveling roughly 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

The impact was devastating. Deal’s passenger, Shayniyah Reynolds, 31, of Atlantic City, was rushed by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where she later died. Stephen Bouchard, 66, of Egg Harbor City, who was driving the Tacoma, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the same facility. He survived. Deal herself was also hospitalized. Bouchard is a beloved former teacher from the Greater Egg Harbor Township School District, and his injuries drew an outpouring of concern from those who knew him.

What investigators found

The county prosecutor’s office determined that Deal had various narcotics in her blood at the time of the accident. Prescription drugs and additional items believed to contain narcotics were also recovered from her vehicle.

The crash came fewer than 24 hours after a separate incident in Ventnor. At approximately 9:11 p.m. on September 3, Deal struck a parked vehicle on the 6700 block of Atlantic Avenue and was cited for careless driving and failure to show proof of insurance. Officers noted no signs of impairment at that time.

A pattern of drug-related trouble leading up to the crash

Deal’s connection to narcotics extended back weeks before the September crash. On August 20, two weeks before the collision, investigators searched Room 102 at the Ramada Hotel in Egg Harbor Township and found heroin, cocaine and 26 amphetamine pills, along with drug packaging materials and digital scales. Deal’s co-defendant in that case, Mark Hopewell, later accepted full responsibility for the drugs. He was sentenced on February 25 and is currently serving a three-year term at Bayside State Prison.

Deal separately pleaded guilty on March 4 to a disorderly persons charge of failure to turn over a controlled dangerous substance and received no jail time and no probation. She was formally charged in connection with the fatal crash just 13 days after that guilty plea. The grand jury returned its indictment on April 14.

What happens next

Deal’s application for a state public defender was approved at a court hearing on April 8, and a formal complaint in the crash case had already been filed on March 17. She is next scheduled to appear in Atlantic County Superior Court on May 4.
