Marvel fans speculate Disney’s recent visual development team’s layoff comes from a major AI takeover plan

With the rise in technological development in the world of entertainment, many of the aspects that required immense effort and manpower, especially for Marvel, are now slowly shifting towards a distinct direction.

Marvel’s visual development team, which is an intricate department catering to the breathtaking visuals that viewers can see in the projects that Marvel brings forth, has come across massive layoffs. The reason for the layoffs is noted to “streamline operations,” according to Josh D’Amaro.

It cannot be denied that the multitude of projects that Marvel brings forth relies heavily on the visuals, now being replaced by technological advancement through AI. Fans have voiced their opinion about this issue on the social media platform Instagram.

A Marvel fan pointed out that the rise of AI usage in the world of entertainment, especially as children are often not able to differentiate, is a significant factor. The fan adds that, “turning to AI causes the kids won’t know the difference. This is why MCU is not cinema.” AI usage for creative works is not something the fans are eager for.

This visual development team previously worked on many projects, such as Wakanda Forever, The Avengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, etc. This sudden shift with the layoffs can be expected to bring in a distinct change in the upcoming projects of Marvel. Another fan has pointed out how many viewers often do not voice their opinions regarding the usage of AI for these projects by saying, “the “ai isn’t that bad just chill” folks out there need to start reevaluating.”

Though it cannot be denied that progress in the technological field is inevitable, certain elements, especially the field of entertainment and creativity, are enhanced through the real artists. Prolonged and constant usage of AI in the field of entertainment will eventually create a huge negative impact. The fan continues to note that “soon these entertainment companies are going to offer only that.”

Though many of the fans have voiced their disappointment about the layoffs, many have pointed out that “you wont even know if they used AI to help with concept art/pre production”. Only time will tell whether the direction that the decision that Disney has taken to lay off employees will be positive or negative. Another fan noted, “Not watching anymore future @disney projects if they start using Ai”.

Marvel fans undoubtedly have strong opinions regarding this new situation. One fan is also quite optimistic about this decision as they think that “Marvel will hire the absolute best of the best to work on their movies/shows”.

Though much of the visual development team is laid off, a small team is retained. This small team will be hiring newer artists; however, it will be on a project-to-project basis. Through the years, there have been many changes, including Bob Iger’s return. Josh D’Amaro is the new CEO of Disney with a goal to “streamline operations” so that the company is able to “ensure” the delivery of “world-class creativity and innovation”.

According to Josh D’Amaro, these new goals require a constant assessment to make sure a “more agile and technologically-enabled workforce” is present so that they can “meet tomorrow’s needs”. D’Amaro also indicated that though the decision to lay off employees has been a “difficult” one, he remains “optimistic” about the direction in which the company is headed.

Besides the visual development team, many of the other departments were also impacted by this decision. Both New York and Burbank staff have been affected by the lay-offs. D’Amaro also noted that the layoffs were “not a reflection” of the contributions of the employees but rather of the “continual evaluation” to “effectively manage” the resources.
