Directed by Lauren Montgomery and William Mata, the fantasy-action animated film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, which is based on Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s immensely popular 2005 animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender, was recently leaked on the internet and was made available on multiple torrenting websites, as per TweakTown.
Produced by Maryann Garge, Latifa Ouaou, Bryan Konietzko, and Michael Dante DiMartino, the one-hour and 38-minute-long movie, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, was initially scheduled to be released in theaters on October 9, 2026, by Paramount. However, it was eventually decided that the film would be released on the Paramount OTT platform, Paramount+.
As cited by TweakTown, the entire movie, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, was first leaked on X (formerly Twitter), with many users receiving links to the film that would expire after a while. Following that, videos of scenes from the movie began to appear on X and other platforms like Reddit.
With the whole thing trending on social media platforms, one of the animators of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, Julia Schoel, took to her X handle to express her disappointment and share her opinion on the matter.
While Julia Schoel shared in her post that they worked on the film for years, wondering they would someday celebrate it on the big screen, but regretted how people shared clips from the film on social media after it was leaked. Julia Schoel wrote on X:
“We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters, just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy.”
She further wrote about how leaking the film online was not justified for Paramount’s decision not to release it theatrically. She added:
“I don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+ but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”
Animator of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender shared that leaking a movie before its release compromises the effort of those who worked on it
Julia Schoel, in her X post, also wrote about how leaking a movie before its official release reduces the effort of everyone who worked hard on the movie. She added:
“Leaking a movie before release undermines the entire effort at its most vulnerable moment. No marketing buildup, premieres, etc, which harms the film’s reputation and affects future opportunities for the artists who worked on it…pirating on the other hand, happens after the film has already had the chance to reach audiences through official channels, and does not harm its reputation.”
