How old is Johnny Somali? American streamer sentenced to prison with hard labor in South Korea for an alleged public nuisance

Ramsey Khalid Ismael, also known by his moniker Johnny Somali, is an American influencer and livestreamer. He is known for his unique brand of streaming, which sometimes involves him travelling abroad and ‘trolling’ the locals.

In the latest news about the streamer, Johnny Somali has been sentenced to six months in jail in South Korea for his actions dating back to 2024. At the time, Seoul police charged him with public nuisance after he posted a clip of himself kissing and committing other lewd acts on a statue representing World War Two s*x slaves. While he apologized stating that he, “didn’t understand the significance of the statue”, the streamer has been detained since, until the most recent news of his sentencing came forth.

According to local media, the court decreed that:

“The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law.”

As per The Guardian, a representative of the Seoul Western District Court later clarified that:

“The court has sentenced him to six months in prison.”

Interestingly, the judge ultimately ruled against the three-year sentence lobbied for by the prosecution as a result of an “absence of severe harm to victims.”

Johnny Somali: A look into the making of the controversial “nuisance” streamer

Johnny Somali is said to have been born to Somali parents, though exact details on his heritage and early life are still murky. He claims he grew up in Arizona and subsequently attended college at Arizona State University, an educational Institution widely recognised for its party-friendly environment. He began releasing content in 2023, primarily on YouTube and Kick.

Somali captured an audience by streaming his travels while acting increasingly abrasive to the local population in the countries he would visit. The first notable controversy on his ledger occurred in 2023 while he was a tourist in Japan.

After causing severe unrest by playing racist songs on trains and making vulgar comments to people on the streets, Osaka police arrested the streamer in August 2023 for trespassing on a construction site. While the charges would be dropped, he was fined ¥200,000 for other minor offences.

After his journey to Japan, Somali seemingly doubled down on the “nuisance streaming” and took the same energy on his subsequent trips abroad. In a later trip to Israel in 2024, for example, his antics only got worse and more abrasive. There, he live-streamed from the Western Wall in Jerusalem, a holy site, where he filmed himself attaching images of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein to the wall.

2 days later, on April 7, 2024, Ismael was detained at a protest in Tel Aviv for sexual harassment of a female police officer. Although he was in custody for under 30 minutes, upon release, he claimed that he witnessed a mass shooting, which authorities were never able to verify.

Johnny Somali has gone on to cause problems in other countries, including Indonesia, and it remains unclear if he will stay on the same course once his sentence has come to an end.
