What inspired Laufey’s “Madwoman” MV featuring Asian talent? Singer explains as Hudson Willians, Alysa Liu, and more make special appearance

Laufey has finally released her much-anticipated music video for her single Madwoman, spotlighting Asian and Asian-American celebrities Hudson Williams, Alysa Liu, Megan Skiendiel, and Lola Tung.

In an official statement, the Icelandic singer-songwriter explained what inspired her to bring together the rising stars in her new visuals.

“Growing up, I felt a general lack of representation for people who looked like me in music and media. With the ‘Madwoman’ video, I wanted to be that representation.”

The Madwoman music video features 1960s summer-themed visuals, with Laufey and her collaborators dressed in shift dresses and bouffant hairstyles with vibrant head bands.

Laufey is also shown at the pool, pouring out her heart to Liu, Skiendiel, and Tung because she learned that her lover Williams cheated on her. However, she could not part ways with her boyfriend; hence, the lyrics:

“But I still want you like a mad, mad woman.”

The relationship progressed into a marriage proposal by Williams, only for Laufey to freak out and run away.

The music video concluded in an eerie tone as her escape was halted when she found out that the road led to a dead-end cliff. She returned to the house and found Williams smoking a cigar, waiting for her.

Madwoman is a track off Laufey’s album A Matter of Time: The Final Hour. Filmed in California, it comes just hours after she performed at Coachella on Sunday, Apr. 12, where she sang her hits Lover Girl, Falling Behind, Valentine, Goddess, Silver Lining, Promise, From the Start, and more.

The jazz-pop is also taking the stage for the festival’s second weekend on the 19th.

Laufey re-signs with Warner Chappell Music

The music video release also arrives just a week after Laufey extended her global deal with Warner Chappell Music.

In a statement on Apr. 7, she expressed her gratitude to the people behind the management.

“Excited to be in continued business with the wonderful, progressively minded people at Warner Chappell. Thank you to Gabz, Guy, Carianne, Ryan and David for their belief and partnership.”
