The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 titled ‘Survive the Streets‘ aired on ABC on April 13. The latest episode of the police procedural series was a documentary-themed episode. John Nolan and Celina were interviewed by the documentary crew (featured in previous seasons of the series), along with Abigail, who is now working with the crew to make her own film.
The action in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 kicks off when John and Celina answer a distressed 911 call from Rick Rowley, a retired LAPD officer who is found stabbed in the heart in a secluded, creepy cabin. Rich is dishevelled and mumbling something. As John and Celina try to help him, he pulls the knife from his heart and dies instantly, leaving a twisted supernatural conspiracy in his wake.
Here is the complete The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 recap.
John and Celina uncover a string of supernatural murders in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15
As John, Celina and the team piece together the details of Rich’s murder for the documentary crew in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15, we are given insights about the case. The duo discovers that Rich has been missing since 2022 but he faked his death because he was obsessed with conspiracy theories. As they delved into Rich’s past in the LAPD, they discovered he was famous for making cringey training videos, which had also been featured in a previous episode. John and Celina make a quick stop at Rich’s house and find a coffin with a 54-year-old truck driver named Marcus Ford. Turns out, Marcus died in 2020 and Rich was looking into his murder until it became a cold case.
When John and Celina notice Marcus’ tattoos in one of Rich’s videos, they decide to dig into his cold cases and videos. Thanks to Lucy’s impressive sleuthing, she links Rich’s videos to seven cold cases, where the victims were stabbed to death and were found with a penny from 1930 on their bodies, the same penny found in Marcus’ heel and Rich’s body.
The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 leans heavily into aliens and demons
The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 takes a turn when the crew comes across one of Rich’s videos at Area 67, which is not surprising, considering his obsession with aliens and demons. However, once they meet Colonel Arthur Grimm, an actor from Three Hundred Days of Hell (one of the scariest movies of the 90s), they discover that he was convinced the cold cases were part of a murder cult involving the Malaphus demon. Rich believed, like the movie, Malaphus is responsible for killing the people and the myth is being carried out in real life.
As Dr. Francine Barrett, the Professor of Medieval Religion, fills in John and Celina on the myth of Malaphus in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15, they learn that the director of the movie, Douglas Roberts, wanted the ritual to be exact and even found a tomb that could lead to the actual summoning of the demon.
This is when The Rookie Season 8 Episode 15 featured a surprise cameo by the Supernatural duo, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who were interviewed by the filming crew due to their work in the genre as the Winchester brothers in The CW series. The duo reveals that they met Rich at a MonsterCon, who asked them questions about Malaphus, mistaking them for actual demon hunters.
In the final moments of the episode, as Abigail and the crew are about to interview Douglas, the movie’s director, they are confronted with guns. However, Angela and Nyla arrive just in time, revealing that Douglas is responsible for all the murders, as they were people who wronged him in some way or another. He used Malaphus’ myth from his movie to create a digression for Rich.
As the episode concludes, the filmmaker offers to work with Abigail again, to which she replies that she has already signed a three-year contract with Hulu, setting up more documentary-themed episodes in the future.
