Adult Swim calls it a wrap for Smiling Friends with official preview of final episode

One of the most loved shows on Adult Swim, Smiling Friends is ending, and after an abrupt mid-season announcement earlier this year, the channel is dropping a preview to the final episode. The cancellation contradicts earlier reports of a full five-season greenlight, creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack have decided to end their beloved animated series on their own terms tonight with the Season 3 finale.

The final episodes will be airing live on Adult Swim with episodes nine and ten of season three, bringing the series total to 28 episodes. In the preview shared on social media, we see an interaction between Mr. Boss, Charlie and Pim.

In the official preview, we see Mr. Boss being dramatic, as he bursts in and claims he just slayed a dragon as he says “We’re saved.” He then says “no, not really,” and then shuffles into the actual job assignment: that Charlie’s unle will be here and they have to make him smile.

Hadel and Cusack have opened up on the show’s ending being their decision, not wanting to overstay the show’s welcome. Speaking to fans from their social media, Cusack stated,

“To be perfectly honest, after we finished season 3, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this. But also pretty accomplished. We just came to this feeling where we’re like, ‘I think that could just be it…’ We both felt like it was right.”

Hadel further added how they’re ending the show on a good note as he continued,

“What feels like, ‘Leave them wanting more,’ rather than, ‘Oh, that show is still on the air? Oh God.’ After several years of really grinding on this show, nonstop without any breaks, 24/7, we got to a point where we just felt like that’s a good spot to end it.”

More details about Smiling Friends

Smiling Friends has been one of the most successful shows on Adult Swim, and it’s a weird, beautiful setting that makes you both laugh and cry. It started in 2020 created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, and revolves around a nonprofit charity that tries to make people smile.

The show is centered around Charlie and Pim, who are polar opposites. Pim is a relentlessly cheerful pink guy who genuinely wants to help people, while Charlie is a big yellow cynic who just wants to go home.
