Big30 wins $100K bond but the fight is far from over

The Memphis rapper was granted bond in the federal case tied to the alleged kidnapping and robbery

Memphis rapper Big30 has been granted a $100,000 secured bond in the federal case connected to the alleged kidnapping and robbery of rapper Gucci Mane — but his release is far from certain after prosecutors moved swiftly to block him from walking free.

Rodney Wright Jr., known professionally as Big30, appeared before a federal judge on Monday, April 6, for a detention hearing. The judge ruled in his favor and granted bond, but the government wasted little time challenging that outcome.

The terms of the bond

Under the conditions set by the court, Wright would be required to make a $10,000 cash payment to secure his release. The remaining bond amount would serve as a financial guarantee tied to his continued compliance. The court also outlined several additional requirements that would govern his freedom if released, including location monitoring, supervision, drug testing and a strict prohibition on any contact with alleged victims or co-defendants in the case.

Prosecutors push back

Despite the judge’s ruling, federal prosecutors argued during the hearing that Wright represents both a flight risk and a danger to the community — two of the primary standards courts apply when determining whether a defendant should remain in custody ahead of trial.

When the judge sided with Wright, prosecutors did not accept the outcome. Court filings show the government submitted a formal motion requesting that the pretrial release order be put on hold while it prepares an appeal. In that filing, prosecutors cited the seriousness of the alleged conduct, Wright’s criminal history and the potential risk he poses to the broader community as the basis for their challenge. The government indicated it plans to file additional arguments in support of revoking Wright’s release by April 13.

One of 9 defendants in the Gucci Mane case

Wright is among nine individuals currently in federal custody in connection with the alleged kidnapping and robbery targeting Gucci Mane. He appeared in court alongside several co-defendants on the day of the hearing, underscoring the scale of the federal case and the number of people caught up in the proceedings.

The outcome of the government’s appeal and the April 13 filing deadline will determine whether Wright is ultimately released or remains in custody while the case moves forward.
