On April 9, TMZ reported that the hip-hop icon Afrika Bambaataa passed away. The Bronx-born rapper and DJ passed away at the age of 67. Bambaataa is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of hip-hop culture. As per reports, the retired artist died in Pennsylvania at 3 AM local time on April 9. The rapper passed away after complications from cancer.
The executive director of Hip Hop Alliance released the statement following the death of Bambaataa.
As per Celebrity Net Worth, Afrika Bambaataa’s net worth was $500k. The famed rapper and DJ developed the hip-hop culture in the 70s and 80s.

In the new statement, Hip Hop Alliance highlighted the contributions made by the late music artist. It mentioned how Bambaataa started the Zulu Nation to help shape the identity of Hip Hop across the globe.
“Today, we acknowledge the transition of a foundational architect of Hip Hop culture, Afrika Bambaataa. As the founder of the Universal Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa helped shape the early identity of Hip Hop as a global movement rooted in peace, unity, love, and having fun. His vision transformed the Bronx into the birthplace of a culture that now reaches every corner of the world.”
The alliance further praised Bambaataa’s music, leadership, and how he inspired new generations of DJs and MCs.
“Through his music, leadership, and influence, he contributed to the foundation of Hip Hop’s core principles, inspiring generations of MCs, DJs, breakers, and cultural leaders. His imprint on Hip Hop history is undeniable and will forever remain part of the culture’s origin story.”
It further read:
“At the same time, we recognize that his legacy is complex and has been the subject of serious conversations within our community. As an organization committed to truth, accountability, and the preservation of Hip Hop culture, we believe it is important to hold space for all voices while continuing to uplift what empowers and protects the people.”
They also extended their condolences to those close to Afrika.
“Today, we extend our condolences to all who were impacted by his life, his work, and his presence.”
In his last years, the artist faced serious s*xual abuse allegations. He even paid a settlement after he lost the case last year.
