The actress is done playing nice, and she’s letting the courtroom do the talking.
Jada Pinkett Smith is not sitting quietly while a man she says is running a harassment campaign tries to cash in on her family name. According to new court documents, the Girls Trip actress is pushing back against Bilaal Salaam, the man at the center of a $3 million lawsuit who claims his association with the Smith family wrecked his life. Jada’s legal team is calling his story exactly what she believes it is: a performance with no receipts to back it up.
What Salaam is claiming
Salaam filed the lawsuit alleging that Jada publicly dragged his reputation after he refused to help Will Smith manage the fallout from the now-infamous 2022 Academy Awards slap. He claims members of the Smith family’s inner circle threatened him when they found out he was writing a memoir that contained information about Will. In his filing, Salaam said all of this caused him severe emotional distress, resulting in significant weight gain, the end of a romantic relationship, and a temporary relocation out of the country.
It reads dramatically. The problem, according to Jada, is that he cannot prove any of it.
Jada’s response to the lawsuit
In her legal response, Jada argued that Salaam has not submitted a single piece of credible evidence to support his emotional distress claims. Stating that something happened in a declaration is not the same as proving it happened. Her team made clear that emotional distress claims of this magnitude require medical records and independent third-party documentation. Weight gain and a breakup, without supporting documentation, do not clear that bar.
She also addressed the allegations head-on. Jada denied every claim Salaam made, calling his accusations false and uncorroborated. She further noted that at no point did she ever mention his name publicly, which makes the idea of her running a targeted campaign against him difficult to sustain. Her attorneys are asking the court to throw the entire case out.
The bigger picture here
What makes this lawsuit particularly loaded is the backdrop it sits against. Will and Jada have spent the last few years navigating one of the most dissected marriages in Hollywood. Their relationship became a cultural flashpoint after the Oscars incident, and both have since spoken publicly about the unconventional terms on which they operate as a couple. That openness, while brave, has also made them a target for people looking to profit from proximity to their story.
Salaam’s lawsuit fits that pattern. Jada’s position is that he is not a victim of her actions but rather someone using public attention as leverage. Whether the court agrees remains to be seen.
Divorce rumors resurface again
Separately, social media lit up this week with claims that Will and Jada are heading toward divorce. The rumors spread fast and drew strong reactions, but there is no confirmation from either party and no credible reporting to support the claim. The couple has been married since 1997 and has acknowledged living largely separate lives while maintaining a close personal bond.
The latest round of speculation appears to trace back to a parody account known for posting misleading content. Until Will or Jada says otherwise, the divorce talk is noise.
