Sam Levinson opens up on Eric Dane’s final moments as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria Season 3

Euphoria Season 3 will give fans a chance to say goodbye to not just the show, but one of the stars who became an important part of the ensemble. Eric Dane, who plays Cal Jacobs on the show will have his final onscreen appearance this season, and creator Sam Levinson is opening up on what it was like to work with the late actor during production. Dane, who passed away on February 19 at age 53 from ALS. He had filmed his scenes after publicly sharing his diagnosis in April 2025.

Levinson recalled the conversation when Dane first told him about his ALS diagnosis and the two sat down to talk about life and what things meant. Talking about that emotional moment, Levinson stated,

“Eric called me before we started shooting and told me that he had been diagnosed with ALS. We had a lot of conversations about just life and what that meant. I loved him very deeply, and I said, ‘Eric, whatever shape you show up in, we’re gonna make it work. I have faith that it’s all gonna work.’”

When production began, he noticed a slight slur in Dane’s voice and immediately adapted to it by making it a scene where Jacobs has drank alcohol. Further talking about him, Levinson added,

“His character, it was such a gift. We’ve got 28 cast members on set, and he just showed up every day with such grace and dignity. He was a great human being.”

Everything we know about Euphoria Season 3

Almost everyone has their life in shambles. Rue is in Mexico, in debt to Laurie and working as a drug mule. Cassie and Nate get married though she’s bored in the suburbs and the trailers suggest her working as a “content creator.” Maddy is working at a talent agency in Hollywood with side hustles, Jules is in art school, nervous about her painting career, Lexi becomes an assistant to a showrunner played by Sharon Stone. That alone promises more dramathan any of the previous seasons, and fans are here for it.

Euphoria Season 3 will premiere on HBO Max.
