High Potential Season 2, the second outing of ABC’s crime-comedy series led by Kaitlin Olsen’s Morgan Gillory, wrapped its run with an explosive finale titled ‘Family Tree.’
The final entry of the sophomore season saw Morgan and Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) coming dangerously close to solving the mystery behind Roman’s disappearance, until a tragedy ended the season on a nail-biting cliffhanger. As Nick Wagner met with a potential source (set up by his corrupt politician father), Morgan found him stabbed and bleeding in the aftermath of the meeting.
The High Potential Season 2 finale ended without confirming Nick Wagner’s fate, leaving his survival uncertain as Morgan desperately called for help.
More on Nick Wagner’s fate in High Potential Season 2 in our story.
All about Captain Nick Wagner’s uncertain fate in the High Potential Season 2 finale
Morgan’s world came crashing down in the High Potential Season 2 finale, as she came across her bleeding Captain and potential romantic interest, Nick Wagner. While Steve Howey’s character had a complicated run in the initial episodes of the sophomore season, with his mustache giving him an almost antagonistic side, he managed to find his place in the precinct and develop a slow-burning romance with Morgan. However, after Soto discovers a connection between Nick Wagner Sr. and Willa Quinn, the woman who revealed Roman is likely responsible for killing a corrupt FBI officer, Morgan became suspicious of her boss. As High Potential continued to expand on Morgan and Nick’s tense dynamics, Roman’s disappearance continued to add drama.
Things came to a head in the High Potential Season 2 finale when Nick Wagner’s father arranged a meeting between his son and an FBI source who had potential intel on Roman’s disappearance. Morgan wanted to join in on the meeting but Nick advised her to come half an hour later, giving him time to size up the guy and understand his intentions. While this move showed Nick’s allegiance to Morgan, it proved to be fateful for him. Nick’s intuition was right, as there was no sign of a meeting when Morgan reached the rendezvous point. Instead, she found her Captain sitting on a bench with multiple wounds on his back.
As Morgan calls 9-1-1, High Potential Season 2 comes to an end, leaving Nick Wagner’s fate on a shocking cliffhanger.
High Potential Season 2: Can Nick Wagner survive?
This is one of the pressing questions the High Potential Season 2 finale leaves us with. Fans wanting to see more of Morgan and Nick’s on-screen chemistry might be in for disappointment as Steve Howey might not return as a series regular in the upcoming season. According to Deadline, the Shameless alum was roped in for a one-year deal for the second season and the finale marked his last entry as a series regular. While Steve Howey can still return in the upcoming season, it will likely be as a guest.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Olsen discussed Morgan’s complicated relationship with Nick in High Potential Season 2, hinting that she certainly had feelings for him:
”I think she actually really has feelings for him…I think she’s been really attracted to him the whole time, and then having him open up and hearing … he had this woman who he was in love with, and she died in his arms and his vulnerability, I think, is really attractive to her. She thinks this is the beginning of something.”
The High Potential Season 3 premiere will naturally address Nick Wagner’s fate and it looks like the Captain will not make it out alive. Even with Morgan calling for help, the situation looked critical. However, even if Nick Wagner pulls through by some miracle, the series might choose to transfer him to another precinct or craft another story for his exit from the show.
