Sounds of Winter finale episode is out now, and with that, the story of Ayana comes to an end. The Japanese drama, revolving around the meaning of love and attraction, ran for a total of ten episodes. The last episode gave a proper ending to Ayana and Yukio’s love story while showing her bond with her two friends, Kotaro and En-chan.
The synopsis of the episode read:
“On Yukio’s birthday, Ayana reveals her concerns and honest feelings before giving him the completed scarf and saying she wants to be with him.”
In the Sounds of Winter episode 10, Ayana meets Yukio in the coffee shop with the intent to reveal all the secrets she has been keeping for so long. Yukio listens to her and asks her about Yamada and her further plans. Ayana asks Yukio if they can be with each other and continue their relationship. However, Yukio makes it clear that he wants to break up and even returns the scarf she gave him as a birthday gift.
Throughout the episode, he remains calm and nice to her and even gives her a haircut in his salon. When Ayana tells Kotaro about her breakup, he starts laughing. By the end of the episode, when En-chan asks Kotaro how he is able to continue the one-sided love with Ayana, he tells her that loving and seeing someone happy is enough for him.
Sounds of Winter Episode 10 recap: Ayana confesses about her secrets to Yukio


In the Sounds of Winter episode 10, Ayana and Yukio, after meeting in the laundromat, go to a coffee shop. Ayana, when talking to Yukio, calls herself a horrible person, revealing that she cheated on him and was attracted to other people while being in the relationship. She adds that she was scared of opening up in the relationship, and that’s why she was trying to be with people with whom she wasn’t serious. Yukio, who was shocked, stayed calm during the whole conversation.
Ayana told Yukio everything she did during their relationship without revealing the names of people, except for Yamada. Though Yukio was surprised listening to how Ayana was okay with being with Yamada when he loved her girlfriend more than her. Ayana told him that it was because Yamada’s girlfriend had passed away, and she decided to stay close to him out of concern since she wanted him to live, which Yukio found very cowardly, as for him, it was exploiting someone’s kindness.
She makes it clear that she still wants to continue the relationship and will not see Yamada anymore. At one point during their conversation, she took out the scarf and gave it to Yukio. However, Yukio, who had already made up his mind before meeting her, breaks up with her and returns the scarf.
It turns out he already sensed something was wrong and their relationship wouldn’t last after seeing her reaction when he asked her to move in. Additionally, Yukio tells Ayana about Sae and his wish to date her after the breakup.

Ayana asks Yukio to give her one last hair trim before they break up. After getting the trim, she thanks Yukio for being with her, adding that he was the most important person to her and the last person she wanted to see. At this point, Ayana wasn’t ready to leave him and even called herself selfish for never truly loving anyone.
However, Yukio asks her not to suffer and to enjoy life as long as it makes her happy, adding that if it makes her feel bad, then she should make changes. She asks one last time if they can start over and meet again as strangers.
Though Yukio makes it clear that he doesn’t want to know her further and wants to end their relationship.
Sounds of Winter ending explained: Ayana finds peace with her friends
After the breakup, Ayana meets Kotaro and tells him everything. Kotaro, on the other hand, seemed happy, after all, he had had a crush on Ayana since the beginning. She even gives him the scarf she made for Yukio, which he doesn’t accept due to his rash. The two decide to unravel it, which eventually leads to rashes on Kotaro’s neck.
The episode then jumps one year ahead, with Ayana having published her novel Winter and Light Blue based on her and En-chan’s love life. She later goes for strawberry picking with En-chan and Kotaro.
At one point, En asks Kotaro how he is not bored with one-sided love. Kotaro tells her that there’s no escape from it because he loves Ayana, and as long as she’s smiling, he is happy with it. Overall, the ending showed Ayana moving on in life, with her friends by her side and finding her own kind of happiness.
