The Jacksonville Jaguars are making a firm, long-term commitment to the player they selected with the very first pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. Defensive end Travon Walker has agreed to a four-year, $110 million contract extension with Jacksonville, his agency announced today. The deal averages $27.5 million per year, includes $77 million in total guarantees and comes with $50 million fully guaranteed at signing, giving the 25-year-old one of the more secure defensive contracts in the league. The agreement had been in the works for several weeks before being finalized today.
A long-term bet on a cornerstone defensive end
Walker becomes the second of the Jaguars’ top defensive ends to receive a major long-term commitment from the franchise. The team locked up Josh Hines-Allen on a five-year, $141.25 million extension in April 2024, and today’s deal with Walker gives Jacksonville two of its most important defensive players under contract for the foreseeable future. The Jaguars’ front office made its desire to retain Walker clear months before the extension was agreed upon. General manager James Gladstone spoke openly at his end-of-season press conference in January about Walker’s character and value to the organization, describing him as someone the team wanted to align itself with over the long haul. Walker’s production and what the numbers say
Through four seasons in Jacksonville, Walker has accumulated 27.5 career sacks while appearing in 63 games and starting 60. His most productive stretch came in 2023 and 2024, when he logged 59 and 56 pressures respectively and reached double-digit sacks in back-to-back seasons, consistently ranking among the top 25 edge rushers in the league in total pressures according to Pro Football Focus. His contributions are not limited to pass rushing, either. Walker brings a well-rounded skill set to the defensive end position, with meaningful involvement in run defense that adds value beyond his sack totals.
Injuries slowed 2025 but did not change the plan
Walker’s 2025 season was significantly disrupted after he suffered a left wrist injury in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers that required surgery. The procedure took place on Sept. 29, sidelining him for one game before he returned and played through a cast on his hand for several weeks. He finished the year with 3.5 sacks in 14 games, making 12 starts, a clear step back from his previous two seasons.
The Jaguars, however, did not let one injury-affected year alter their assessment of his long-term importance to the roster. The extension was negotiated and agreed upon with full awareness of the 2025 context, a signal that the organization views the abbreviated season as an outlier rather than a trend.
A franchise built around defensive talent
The Walker extension reinforces what Jacksonville has been building on the defensive side of the ball in recent years. With both Walker and Hines-Allen committed to the franchise on substantial long-term deals, the Jaguars have a formidable edge rushing foundation that gives their defensive scheme a legitimate identity. Walker, who also recorded an interception in his very first professional game against the Washington Commanders in 2022, has grown from a highly touted but unproven prospect into an established pass rusher with the kind of contract that reflects genuine league-wide respect for his abilities.
He arrived in Jacksonville as the most scrutinized player in his draft class given the weight of the No. 1 overall selection, and his tenure so far has justified the faith the organization placed in him.
