Brandon Clarke arrested in Arkansas on several charges

The Grizzlies forward’s difficult season took an unexpected turn this afternoon in Arkansas

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas This afternoon, according to records from the Cross County Sheriff’s Office. Clarke, 29, was booked at approximately 1 p.m. local time and faces four charges: trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing in a vehicle exceeding the speed limit and improper passing.

Cross County Sheriff David West confirmed the arrest to local media. The sheriff’s office did not respond to a broader request for comment at the time of publication.

Clarke’s booking profile initially listed him as being held on a CID hold, a designation whose meaning can vary between law enforcement departments. The Cross County Sheriff’s Office website references its criminal investigation division, which it abbreviates as CID, describing its top priority as combating the manufacture and distribution of narcotics. The division is responsible for processing evidence, preparing affidavits for warrants and conducting other investigative work.

How the Grizzlies responded

Memphis head coach Tuomas Iisalo addressed reporters on Wednesday ahead of the team’s game against the New York Knicks but offered little beyond acknowledgment. He confirmed he was aware of the report and declined to comment further.

The Grizzlies organization had not issued a formal statement at the time of publication.

A season that was already over

The arrest comes at the end of a season that had already been lost for Clarke. He appeared in only two games during the 2025-26 campaign, first missing the start of the year due to lingering knee inflammation before sustaining a right calf strain in December that kept him sidelined for the remainder of the year. On March 24, the Grizzlies formally ruled him out for the rest of the season after new imaging showed he needed additional healing before he could return to high-intensity activity.

Clarke’s injury history over the past three seasons has been extensive. He tore his Achilles in March 2023, an injury that cost him the end of that season and all but six games of 2023-24. He returned healthy in 2024-25 but again missed the final stretch after sustaining a PCL strain. This season’s two-game appearance pushed his total over the last three years to just 72 games.

Clarke’s history with the Grizzlies

The Grizzlies selected Clarke with the 21st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He is tied with Ja Morant as the longest-tenured player on the current roster, a measure of how central he once was to the team’s identity before injuries began to accumulate.

Over seven seasons and 309 games, Clarke has averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Before his Achilles injury he was a dependable and efficient rotation player, valued for his energy, rim protection and scoring efficiency. The version of Clarke that Memphis has been waiting to return has not been consistently available since the spring of 2023.

Today’s arrest adds a significant and serious dimension to what has already been a difficult chapter in his career. The charges he faces, particularly trafficking a controlled substance and fleeing law enforcement, carry substantial legal consequences independent of whatever the Grizzlies decide in terms of his roster status going forward.

This is a developing story.
