General Hospital, the daytime television mainstay that became a pop culture phenomenon, turns 63 years old today, as it maintains its spot as the longest-running scripted broadcast program in American history. To celebrate the occasion, your favorite Port Charles pals played pass the cake in a very fun way.
A big day in soap opera history

April 1 may be April Fool’s Day for some people, but for longtime soap fans, it is the day that two medical dramas premiered in 1963. The Doctors made its debut on NBC as an anthology soap opera, but soon morphed into a traditional daytime drama. Sadly, The Doctors aired its last episode on December 31, 1982.
The other soap to premiere on April 1 was General Hospital, a soap that was near cancellation 15 years later, but was saved from near-death by a new executive producer, Gloria Monty, and two stars, Anthony Geary and Genie Francis, who put GH on the map as Luke and Laura. Geary passed away just a few short months ago in December, while Francis still brings Laura to life to this day.
Lately, GH has been pulling out all the stops to draw viewers in, and it’s been paying off, with the soap back to over 2 million viewers each week. Fans were blown away last week by the quality storytelling that ushered Jason Morgan off the canvas for a few months as Steve Burton takes an extended break.
An on-set General Hospital celebration
On the morning of April 1, 2026, General Hospital released a fun social media vehicle featuring cast members on set passing a small cake around with the “6” and “3” candles in the middle.
In the video, you can see your favorite stars smiling in their spring best on their respective sets, which might tell us a little bit about what’s coming up in May. The Metro Court gardens will be in regular use again, as we see Sawandi Wilson (Isaiah Gannon) and Cynthia Watros (Nina Reeves) there wanting a slice.
Brick will be back on the scene as Stephen A. Smith smiles with some cake, while Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna) appears to be visiting Lulu’s house again. We even get a sneak peek at Nathan Dean (formerly Nathan Parsons), who will be back as Ethan Lovett any day. It also looks like Lucas will still be living at Wyndemere, as we see Van Hansis in the foyer.
Here’s to many more years with our favorite soap. We can’t wait to see what it has in store for the big 6-5.
Catch all-new episodes of General Hospital weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
