Born Again Season 2 Episode 2 featured a shocking return, and no, it’s not Bullseye

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 2, “Shoot the Moon”, featured an unexpected cameo in addition to Bullseye’s return. The said unexpected cameo is that of Cole North, played by actor Jeremy Isaiah Earl. For those who don’t know, Earl made his debut in the MCU with the role of Cole North in the first season of Born Again.

In the first season, North is one of the corrupt cops who has joined the Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF). In the season 1 finale, we also learned that North is the masked assailant who killed Hector Ayala in the closing minutes of the first season’s third episode, “The Hollow of His Hand”. But many believed that North died in the season 1 finale, which is why it was surprising to see him in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 2.

Why was Cole North’s appearance in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 surprising?

North is one of the many AVTF officers who raided Matt Murdock’s apartment in the Born Again Season 1 finale. There, the AVTF encounters not only Daredevil but also Frank Castle. During this battle, Cole North is outed as the culprit behind Hector Ayala’s death. Meanwhile, an unknown officer throws a grenade, which forces Frank and Matt to jump out of the apartment.

Considering North was one of the officers inside the exploding apartment, many believe that he died in the explosion. However, the second Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 episode reveals that North was recovering from his injuries. We can even see that North’s face has burn scars. In the second episode, North requests that Powell let him rejoin the AVTF, which the latter accepts.

We see North again in Born Again Season 2’s third episode, as he assists Kirsten McDuffie towards Jack Duquesne’s interrogation room, as the AVTF has her blindfolded. His return in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has fans hopeful that the MCU Cole North would match his comic counterpart.

Cole North in the comics started as someone trying to arrest vigilantes, but he was an honest police officer, unlike his MCU counterpart. However, over time, North became one of his fiercest allies. The character is described like this on the Marvel website:

“Cole North debuted just after he joined the New York Police Department in DAREDEVIL (2019) #1 by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto. Raised in Chicago, North eventually joined the Chicago Police Department. Although he successfully brought in several criminals and corrupt police officers, North accidentally shot a teenager when he mistook his phone for a gun. After investigations into the incident, North accepted a transfer to the NYPD. When he asked to be partnered with a non-corrupt officer, North was paired with Detective Fred Higgins, who he saw as a competent investigator. Detective North left a striking impression on his new precinct as a skilled boxer and accomplished bodybuilder who briefly stood as the department’s most physically fit officer. On his first case, North investigated Pistol Pat Albano, a low-level criminal who Daredevil had beaten. Although the other officers there tried to ignore the vigilante’s involvement, North reprimanded them and said he saw Daredevil as someone gleefully committing violent acts. After Daredevil accidentally killed the criminal Leo Carraro while breaking up a robbery, North found one of the hero’s billy clubs at the crime scene and vowed to bring him to justice.”

However, over time, North does realize that he wants to help people more than uphold the law, which is why he became Daredevil’s ally.

Are you hopeful that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 sets up Cole North to match his comicbook counterpoint? Let us know.
