Pokémon Go reveals Mimikyu and it’s not a joke

After years of fan demand and countless Halloween disappointments, Mimikyu has officially arrived in Pokémon Go as part of the A Shockingly Good Time event.

The wait is finally over

For years, Pokémon Go players have watched every Halloween come and go without any sign of Mimikyu, the beloved Ghost-type creature that hides beneath a hand-drawn Pikachu disguise. Its absence had become something of a running joke in the community. April 1, 2026 changed everything.

Developer Niantic quietly set the stage with what appeared to be a routine Electric-type event called A Shockingly Good Time. The announcement was deliberately understated, but sharp-eyed players noticed something odd. Certain encounter slots in the event’s Go Pass were hidden behind question marks, and the April 1 Spotlight Hour listed only Pikachu with no explanation for what else might appear. Speculation spread quickly.

When April Fool’s Day arrived, so did Mimikyu.

What players found in the game

Players who opened Pokémon Go on Wednesday morning found Mimikyu silhouettes appearing on their in-game radar. Many assumed it was a prank. The creature had been absent for so long that many in the community simply did not believe Niantic would choose the most deceptive day of the year to make it real. But the spawns were genuine.

Mimikyu is appearing in the wild and through select event field research task rewards. The April 1 Spotlight Hour, running from 6 to 7 p.m. local time, features increased Mimikyu spawns alongside Pikachu. The question mark encounters within the A Shockingly Good Time Go Pass have also been revealed as Mimikyu encounters.

One important note for collectors: Mimikyu will not be available in its shiny form at launch, as is standard for newly debuted Pokémon in the game. Pikachu encountered during the event does have an increased shiny rate.

Who is Mimikyu?

Mimikyu is one of the most popular Pokémon in the franchise’s history, introduced in the 3DS titles Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Its appeal lies in a mystery that the games lean into deliberately. No one has seen what Mimikyu actually looks like beneath its disguise and survived to describe it. Its Pokédex entry from Pokémon Sun states that a scholar who glimpsed what was under its costume was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock. A follow-up entry in Pokémon Ultra Moon recounts a similar fate for a passing trainer caught in a gust of wind.

The creature wears its crooked Pikachu-shaped disguise out of a desire to be loved the way Pikachu is loved. That backstory, equal parts eerie and heartbreaking, has earned Mimikyu a devoted fanbase that has been pushing for its Pokémon Go debut for years.

The event continues through April 6

Mimikyu’s arrival is part of the broader A Shockingly Good Time event, which runs through Monday, April 6 at 8 p.m. local time. The event features daily Spotlight Hours from 6 to 7 p.m., each highlighting a different Electric-type Pokémon. Following Mimikyu’s Wednesday appearance, the schedule continues with Magnemite on Thursday, Chinchou on Friday, Pawmi on Saturday, Dedenne on Sunday and Joltik on Monday.

The event also features increased shiny rates for Pikachu, Chinchou and Dedenne, along with a Go Pass offering both free and paid reward tracks. The paid Deluxe Track is available for $4.99, or $6.99 with six ranks pre-completed. Players have until 7:59 p.m. local time on Wednesday, April 8 to claim their Go Pass rewards.

For a community that has spent years waiting, the timing could not be more fitting. The Pokémon that hides its true face chose the one day of the year built around deception to finally show up, and it turned out to be completely real.
