Rahul Arunoday Banerjee Died Trying To Save Co-Actress? His Lungs Were Filled With Water And Sand

Kolkata’s Tollytown has been left devastated at the unexpected demise of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who tragically lost his life on Sunday, March 29, 2026, by drowning in Talsari, Digha. The suddenness of his death has left the entire Bengali industry in shock, given that Rahul had just finished shooting his scene for bengali soap, Bhole Baba Paar Karega.

The actor-writer-producer’s death at age 42 has left his fans and colleagues devastated, and it has been especially traumatic for Rahul’s co-star, Sweta Mishra, who had been with him in his final moments. Reports suggest the actor died in a bid to save Sweta.

What happened on Talsari beach?

The incident reportedly occurred around 5:30 p.m. during a television shoot at Talsari beach near the Odisha-Bengal border. Eyewitnesses have said that the cast and crew were filming in what appeared to be shallow, knee-deep water when things suddenly took a hazardous turn, though none could have expected it would prove fatal. A female co-actor, later confirmed to be Sweta, suddenly lost her balance and slipped into a depression in the seabed.

Seeing Sweta struggle underwater, Rahul immediately rushed in to help, and he, too, slipped and fell into the ditch. While the co-actress could be rescued quickly, Rahul wasn’t that lucky. A strong current of water swept the actor further into the sea, and he soon disappeared underwater. A local boatman who witnessed the tragedy from a distance said:

“Rahulji was still standing when Madam (Sweta) slipped and fell. She was wearing a sari and was trapped in the water. He went in, trying to save her.”

Following Rahul’s death, Balasore SP Pratyush Diwakar said that he and his co-actor were in the middle of filming on a speedboat when high-tide waves caused them to lose their balance and fall into the sea. While the filming crew was present, only one of them could be saved in time. It reportedly took rescuers nearly an hour to locate Rahul and retrieve him from the water. SP Diwakar said:

“Joint verification by Talsari and Digha Police revealed that the incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Sunday when Rahul Banerjee and Sweta Mishra were shooting for a serial. Suddenly, both of them fell into a ditch, and their team immediately took them to Digha Hospital. However, the male actor could not be saved.”

What does the postmortem report say?

Rahul was reportedly still conscious when he was retrieved from the water, and despite throwing up a lot of water, much of the water had gone into his lungs, along with sand. Even though he was immediately rushed to the Digha State General Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. Authorities later confirmed that Rahul died due to drowning.

Postmortem reports say the actor’s lungs had swollen to nearly double their size. His lungs were filled with a large amount of saline water and sand, an indication that he had struggled to breathe underwater for an extended period. Reports also suggest that sand was found in his esophagus and stomach, as is common in cases of prolonged submersion. A senior Digha Police officer was quoted by The Telegraph:

“The preliminary post-mortem opinion is clear that the actor had taken in a lot of saline water and sand, which means he was gasping for air under water.”

An officer at Talsari police station revealed that the crew had not sought permission from local authorities to film at the location, which would have increased the safety concerns with adequate “precautionary steps that are generally taken during such shoots.” The officer said:

“Had they informed us, we could have made the necessary arrangements. For any such shooting, we keep a doctor’s team, lifeguards, rescue boats, and police ready. There was none nearby on Sunday.”
