It: Welcome to Derry became one of the most successful HBO shows in 2025. But after Season 1 ended on December 14, 2026, not much has been heard about Season 2. While the creators of the show intend to make three seasons of It: Welcome to Derry, HBO has yet to officially renew the show for Season 2.
However, development for the show has begun, and it’s slowly taking shape. We will most likely not get any new casting news until the season renewal is official, but Andy and Barbara Muschietti, co-creators of the show, have teased that Season 2 of the show will have a lot of ideas from the previous season.
It: Welcome to Derry will have a lot of Andy Muschietti’s ideas from Season 1
It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 is going to be set twenty-seven years before the events of Season 1, as the creators of the show are trying to establish the fact that Pennywise resurfaces to torture the people of Derry every twenty-seven years. Instead of following an ascending order of events, the show is going to go back twenty-seven years every season.
While the exact plot of the story for It: Welcome to Derry has not yet been revealed, Andy and Barbara Muschietti have teased that many ideas that were formed during Season 1, that couldn’t be added to the show then, will be added in Season 2.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Barbara Muschietti said,
“My brother is obsessive, right. And whenever he has an idea that we can’t get into that particular movie or particular show,”
Andy Muschietti intercepted her saying,
“It lands on the next one.”
Barbara Muschietti then added,
“It will survive and it will land.”
Andy then continues,
“Yeah so we can’t tell you about it because it’s season two. We can’t tell you what it is, but it’s definitely happening.”
These ideas that the creators talked of can be related to Pennywise’s powers, his schemes, their effects, and Derry in general. We won’t know more unless It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 comes out. There is a sense of uncertainty among fans regarding Season 2 and if and when it will get officially confirmed. In a recent interview with Collider, Barbara said,
“Yeah, it is going to be official,”
She continued,
“We’re all working towards it. We are working, the studio is working. It’s just that we want to make it real, and we need the material.”
Andy added,
“Sometimes the announcements come a little delayed because of deals and stuff. I don’t want to get too granular about it, but there’s a general intention to make it happen.”
Regarding what we can expect from It: Welcome to Derry Season 2, Andy Muschietti also said in the Collider interview,
“The Bradley Gang is coming in hot.”
Barbara added to that saying,
“And a lot more fantastic characters. It’s a lot of fun […] There are hats! [Laughs]”
Andy added,
“There are kids smoking, kids with no teeth. There’s a lot of Depression era.”
While we can’t figure out the exact plot of Season 2, we can say that it is probably going to be darker than Season 1, not only when it comes to Pennywise’s actions, but also in the social setting.
Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO Max.
