Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is a menacing villain on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 but even he faced a breaking point on set, and that was having to work with Matthew Lillard. The actor opened up on how “annoying” he found Lillard, and he blamed it on how their fictional counterparts on the show’s relationship is.
In an interview posted by the show’s official account, D’Onofrio sits down with Charlie Cox to talk about his relationship with Lillard. He opens up on working together decades ago on Spanish Judges back in the 1990s, so the tension wasn’t between strangers and it was something that developed on set. Talking about that he says,
“So Matthew’s character, and I’ve known Matthew for a long time. We did a film together back in like the 90s or something, something crazy. My character, Fisk, dislikes him so much that it led into the way I feel about Matthew. It’s never happened before on this show”
According to D’Onofrio, his character Fisk’s disdain for Lillard’s character bled into his real feelings. “My character finds him so annoying,” D’Onofrio explained, recalling his reaction when he first read the scenes of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. “I remember reading the scene and going, I hate this guy.” He adds,
“My character finds him so annoying. I remember reading the scene and going, f** that guy. I hate this f**ing guy. ..And it’s just, it’s so weird because, you know, when I see Matthew, we give each other hugs and all that, you know. During the shooting of the second season, I really had a hard time being in the same room as Matthew. “
More details about Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is shaping up to be a major event for Marvel as it has already garnered praise and glowing reviews within a week of release. This time, the show’s diving deep into Matt Murdock’s resistance against Wilson Fisk’s iron grip on New York City as mayor.
Matthew Lillard joins the cast as Mr. Charles, a CIA operative who’s way more interested in global politics than NYC. D’Onofrio plays Fisk, the mayor who holds all the power now. Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and the season is also bringing back Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter. Cox is getting a major upgrade too as the iconic double-D chest emblem on his suit is here, finally bringing the character’s look in line with the comics. All in all, it seems like a good season.
