Where is Carter and why is he missing from the spotlight? Here’s what the latest trailer hinted

Carter is in Dutton Ranch, but you wouldn’t know that from the first trailer. When the much-anticipated teaser was rolled out by Paramount+, fans were greeted with plenty of Beth and Rip intensity, two Oscar-nominated actors, and a bit of Texas chaos. What they didn’t get was a real look at Carter (played by Australian actor Finn Little), who is in this new chapter.

He rolls on the scene for about a nanosecond, fists at the ready, seeming prepared to throw down near the end of the fast-paced montage. That was it.

That deliberate sidestep speaks for itself. Carter isn’t absent from the show. He is absent from the marketing. And that’s a huge difference because by the version of Dutton Ranch that’s described in the official show premise, his growth is one of the top reasons Beth and Rip drove off with everything they owned and headed south.

If you need a quick refresher, Carter joined the Yellowstone universe in Season 4 as a scrappy, parentless kid who crossed paths with Beth Dutton, and somehow stayed around. Carter’s father had passed away, leaving him with no family and no prospects. Beth, a woman determined never to be a mother, took the young boy under her wing. Rip, who was first hesitant, was also all-in eventually.

By the time the Yellowstone series came to an end in December 2024, Carter had been learning the ins and outs of ranch life for quite some time from some of the most difficult of Montana’s residents. When the original Dutton Ranch was sold back to the Broken Rock Reservation and Beth and Rip decided to leave, Carter followed. Not having anywhere else to go, they became the only family he has ever had.

So what is Carter’s role in Dutton Ranch?

The series description itself states it as straightforwardly as possible. Beth and Rip’s mission in South Texas is to outlive the harsh terrain they have escaped to and to shape Carter into the man he is supposed to be. That man, who he is supposed to be, can be found in nearly all the official material tied to Dutton Ranch.

That framing is revealing. It establishes Carter as no longer merely a fixer or a background distraction in the show, but as a vital and articulated component of its design. Beth and Carter are now a family, however reluctantly assembled, and Carter‘s coming-of-age is now core to the broader narrative.

This is also confirmed by the first-look photos from the show. For example, he is pictured with Oreana, a new character being introduced, played by Natalie Alyn Lind, so we know he will have his own love affair. However, he looks quite a bit older, no longer the wide-eyed and curly-haired kid who was seen walking onto the Yellowstone Ranch for the first time. He looks like he has done years of real, hard work.

Why did the trailer leave him out?

This is the question fans keep returning to. Carter is just one of three characters to have jumped from the original Yellowstone to this spinoff. Beth and Rip are the other two. Here, Carter remains a link between old and new Yellowstone. However, the trailer utilized him for just a two-second moment of action. There was no context, dialogue, or emotional hook.

The most straightforward reason is one of intent: marketing chose it that way. Dutton Ranch is breaking into a saturated slate of Paramount+ shows. Marshals, the Kayce Dutton show that has already been on CBS since early 2026, was quickly renewed for a second season. The need to forge a new narrative meant the focus shifted onto Beth and Rip. They are the stars of the franchise. Clearly, alongside Oscar-nominated Annette Bening and Ed Harris as a vengeful rival rancher and an old-timer local veterinarian, the preview had a glitz to it.

Carter hasn’t quite achieved the same name recognition among viewers despite his place as integral to the story. For all he did, he was only secondary to a larger picture, and that’s what the Dutton Ranch trailer played him up as.

When can fans expect to see more of Carter?

Dutton Ranch will premiere on both Paramount+ and the Paramount Network on May 15, 2026. It will be a two-episode premiere, with subsequent episodes released weekly on Fridays until a total of 9 episodes in season one.

With two entire episodes premiering on day 1, there’s not going to be a long wait to discover Carter’s role in this Texas chapter. And from the photos we have seen published so far. particularly the one where he is pictured with Oreana in Episode 2, it appears that they have actually given him some substance this time.

Perhaps the trailer has been keeping him hidden in the shadows. But indications are that Carter will finally be granted time on Dutton Ranch.
