While speaking to Collider at SXSW, Grimes said that Season 2 will have more than 13 episodes, adding,

“No, it’s going to be more than that. It’s up in the air right now. It’s either going to be 18 or 20. Yeah. They like it.”

Luke Grimes’ latest Marshals Season 2 update and CBS’ plans for the Yellowstone spin-off

The biggest takeaway here is that CBS is ready to go bigger and better with Marshals Season 2 almost immediately. Season 1 still has a long run left, but Season 2 already has a filming update and Luke Grimes has confirmed it is set to begin in May.

According to Grimes during his SXSW talk with Collider, he said,

“No, it’s going to be more than that…It’s either going to be 18 or 20.”

Which means that Season 2 of the CBS series could be adding five to seven extra episodes in its second year (a treat for us!). The show also pulled in a good amount of fans on broadcast as well as on Paramount+, which explains how the Season 2 renewal came in so early.

Why is the bigger episode count so much more important when it comes to story-telling for the CBS series and Kayce Dutton

A longer Season 2 could do a lot for Marshals beyond just giving fans us a few episodes to watch. Since this show takes a look at Kayce Dutton, more time on air (along with more episodes) gives the TV series more room to build on its own identity as well as on Kayce’s character.

Season 1 was ordered for 13 episodes but if Season 2 really lands at 18 or 20 episodes, the CBS series would get a lot more space to slow down and actually build a strong world for Kayce and the U.S. Marshals team.

That kind of episode count is also one of the few real advantages network TV still has. While many streaming shows come back with shorter seasons and longer waits, the Yellowstone spin-off looks like it might just be heading the other way and for a Taylor Sheridan series? This just opens up a lot more room for case-of-the-week storytelling and honestly it would give us more time to live and breathe with the character while he’s figuring out life of his own away from the ranch.

Marshals now has two major Season 2 details on the table, and both are worth paying equal attention to. Luke Grimes told Collider at SXSW that filming is expected to begin in May, which puts the show in motion much sooner than some fans may have expected.

He also said Season 2 will be a lot bigger than Season 1, with the episode total currently landing at either 18 or 20.

Right now, it looks like a series CBS wants to keep pushing in a much bigger way and we’re excited to see what’s next for Kayce Dutton.
