1) A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Adapted from Holly Jackson’s eponymous 2019 novel, this 2024 murder mystery adaptation is the perfect binge-watch for all mystery genre enthusiasts. Starring Emma Myers as a young woman, Pip Fitz-Amobi, who sets out to solve a harrowing murder mystery of a local schoolgirl in her small town. Pip is accompanied by her friends, Cara Ward (Asha Banks) and Ravi Singh (Zain Iqbal).

Much like Jackson’s novel, Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder debuted to positive fan reactions and critical acclaim and is about to return with its sophomore season.

2) Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials

A list of the best murder mystery adaptations would certainly be incomplete without this recent three-part crime thriller series on Netflix. Adapted from the ‘Queen of Mystery’ Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery, the series is a classic and intriguing ‘whodunit’ that is perfect for a weekend binge. A dinner party at a lavish country house in England goes wrong when Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent’s suitor, Gerry Wade, is found dead and she is tasked with finding his killer.

With impressive performances by Mia McKenna-Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials deserves a shining spot on your watchlist.

3) Fool Me Once

It would be criminal to make a best murder mystery adaptations list and not include a Harlan Coben novel. While Netflix has its own mini library of the best Coben’s works, we certainly have our favorite in Fool Me Once, based on the mystery author’s eponymous 2016 novel.

The series follows Maya Stern, a former military Pilot, struggling after the recent murder of her husband. After Maya installs a nanny cam to monitor her young daughter, she is shocked to see her dead husband in one of the videos, setting up a twisted mystery that unmasks her husband’s past and the truth about his murder.

4) Bodies

Netflix’s sci-fi thriller series Bodies is unlike any other murder mystery adaptations on the platform. Based on Si Spencer and Dean Ormston’s 2014-15 eponymous DC Vertigo graphic novel, the series begins with the disappearance of an unidentified dead body in London, which appears in the same location in four different years: 1890, 1941, 2023 and 2053.

Bodies impressively combine the elements of time travel and murder mystery in a deeply twisted story that leads to four different (yet the same) investigations across different years.

5) Dept Q.

This Matthew Goode-led crime thriller series, based on Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Department Q novel series, is another impressive addition to this list of the best murder mystery adaptations. Following an ambush shooting, brash but top-rated detective Carl Morck is made the reluctant head of the cold case unit, Department Q. Morck and his misfit group of detectives are assigned the cold case of Merritt Lingard, a Crown Office solicitor who went missing years ago.

With strong performances by Goode, Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov and Jamie Sives, Dept. Q debuted to positive reviews and has been renewed for another season.
