In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actresses spoke about the ending, with Kidman describing the transformation as something wild. Kay, who has spent her life dissecting violence with clinical precision, finally loses control and becomes part of the brutality she has always studied. Speaking to the outlet she states,
“She’s completely become wild. She’s become a killer herself. She has found in her[self] what she actually investigates, so that’s pretty heavy.”
On the other hand, Curtis points out the emotional whiplash between the composed, controlled woman introduced at the start and the shattered figure at the end as she adds,
“When I saw the look on Scarpetta’s face after that moment of rage and violence and the loss of all control. and the panic and the fear. Going from the first time we see her to that last episode — in eight episodes of television — was thrilling to watch! It’s just fantastic work. As a producer, I was particularly excited because, again, it’s on her, with all due respect. So if you don’t buy that ride, you don’t buy the show, and I bought that ride because [Kidman] committed so completely to losing it all in that.”
Both actors agree that this ending is not just about shock value and that it sets up a deeply unstable future for Kay, where the line between investigator and subject has been blurred beyond repair. As it seems, season two is going to deal with the fallout of a woman who has finally crossed her own moral boundary.
