Spider-Man: Brand New Day just dropped its first trailer, and Marvel nerds just can’t keep calm! Peter Parker is becoming someone we have never really seen before. This is not the same friendly neighborhood Spider-Man swinging around cracking jokes. This version, in the trailer, looks tired, sad, and isolated. No Way Home left him in a difficult place. But this new chapter seems to be pushing him even further.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Peter alone. There is no MJ or Ned with him. No one remembers him. He is trying to rebuild his life from scratch. But just then, we see his powers changing. The trailer shows him fighting new enemies. But he is also shown struggling with himself. There is something inside him changing without his control.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to be borrowing from some of the darkest and weirdest Spider-Man comic arcs. Especially The Other, where Peter literally goes through a death and rebirth cycle and comes back… different. In the trailer, we see him in pain, wrapped in webbing, and acting a little off. All of this could hint that Marvel is following a mutation storyline. And if that is the case, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could also be setting up elements of the Man-Spider storyline as well.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer – The new powers Peter Parker gets after his mutation
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is focusing on Peter’s mutation, and the powers we see in the trailer are just the tip of the iceberg. The biggest change is his webbing. It is not coming from web-shooters this time. It is coming from him. That means his body is now producing webs naturally, which is a massive shift from the Tom Holland version we are used to. This comes from The Other storyline, where his abilities become more biological and less tech-based.
Probably the most important visual clue in the trailer is the cocoon in which we see Peter wrapped up. It is almost like he is being reborn. In the comics, he dies. After which he forms a cocoon and comes back stronger with upgraded powers. So this may suggest, if they are following the comics, whatever is happening to him is an evolution of his Spider-Man identity.
His spidey-sense also seems stronger. He has heightened senses, which means he is stronger and even more agile now. But all of it also seems overwhelming. He looks disoriented. His mutation is not stable, which is why we see him reach out to Bruce Banner. His powers are too much for him to handle.
If the trailer has not fully revealed his powers after mutation, and if the movie is following The Other comics storyline, Peter could also be developing stingers. In The Other, Peter develops sharp, venomous spikes that come out of his wrists. They are brutal.
If Spider-Man: Brand New Day goes there, it changes everything. Because now it is about whether Peter can still hold on to who he is, or if this mutation pushes him toward something way more dangerous, something we have seen glimpses of in the Man-Spider storyline.
