For Lisa Kudrow, there could not be a more perfect time to bring The Comeback back as the actress opened up on how the entertainment industry is facing another major shift, making the show even more relatable and relevant to the current climate in Hollywood. The show has always mirrored real life incidents, with the debut season capturing the rise of reality television and everything that revolves around it, while the second season focused on the sitcom industry.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter about how it’s the perfect time for The Comeback to make a comeback as she stated,
“I think now is the right time for The Comeback to come back, because it seems like every 10 years, we’re sort of chronicling what’s happening in the industry. There’s a new television landscape. So I think there is one now. Michael Patrick King had the idea. We’re always talking about, you know, what would Valerie be doing now, and hey, it’s about 10 years. And he had this idea that Valerie’s offered the lead in a new sitcom, but it’s written by AI. And I went, yeah, of course, of course. She has to navigate that.”
In the interview she also talked about how the show has been telling these stories from before they even became real issues as she stated,
“Without planning it, we’ve been telling these stories about potential extinction events. Now, 10 years later, it’s the threat of AI that will, what, be one guy and a machine spinning out drafts? What’s going to be left?”
Kudrow has also confirmed that this will be the final season as the closing chapter of a trilogy, one that respects both the character and the audience. By addressing the current moment so directly, the revival feels necessary and much relevant to current times.
