Larry David opens up about working with Barack Obama for his upcoming HBO comedy series

Larry David is returning to HBO nearly two years after the ending of Curb Your Enthusiasm, with a new sketch comedy show. The upcoming series is titled Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: an Almost History of America, and is set to premiere on June 26, 2026.

The seven-part series is set to introduce numerous Hollywood big names, including Katheryn Hahn, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Bill Hader, among others. The star-studded ensemble cast also includes former US President Barack Obama, who is also a producer in the Larry David comedy series. During the SXSW interview, David talked about his friendship with Obama, and revealed that they occasionally play golf together, and stated:

“I know him. Don’t look down on him because of that. We play golf together from time to time.”

Larry David’s upcoming HBO comedy series titled Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: an Almost History of America, will premiere at 9 p.m. on July 26, 2026, on HBO. The seven-part series will feature various sketches relating to American history, and is also expected to touch upon the political climate of the North American country.

While talking about the upcoming series at the SXSW panel, co-writers Larry David and Jeff Schaffer also talked about working with former US President Barack Obama, who is expected to appear in Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: an Almost History of America, and is also one of the producers on the show.

Schaffer revealed that much of the time, the former President and Larry David spent together while working on the series included moments such as the former teasing David about his golfing and putting on too much sunscreen.

He also recalled an occasion when Obama wanted to talk to David about a certain sketch, as he disagreed with it, but also praised David, and told them about how he tends to adhere to advice from experts in the fields throughout his presidency. David further added and stated:

“On Curb and Seinfeld, I’m used to being the boss. Obama is also quite used to being the boss. We came to bit of a loggerhead there.”

At the end, David revealed how they found the middle ground as he recalled himself telling the former President:

“I said, ‘I’m president here.'”

Along with Obama, various other Hollywood stars are set to appear in Larry David’s HBO series, Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: an Almost History of America.
