Where is Benjamin Grey? Here’s what we know

Outlander Season 8 Episode 2, titled Prophecies, was released on March 13, 2025. Although there is a ‘violent tragedy’ at Fraser’s Ridge, the bear attack and ongoing trouble with new settlers, as Jamie and Claire manage the community, a significant development also happens.

It turns out Benjamin Grey is alive. That’s the bombshell revealed to William Ransom at the end of Outlander Season 8 Episode 2. William learns that his cousin Ben died of an unidentified disease while a prisoner of a rebel camp. But everything seems off. So William digs the grave and sees a stranger’s face gazing back at him.

This revelation sets the stage for one of the biggest puzzles to be revealed in Outlander’s final season. Benjamin Grey, portrayed by Alex Bhat, is alive somewhere. Where he is and why his death was staged are issues that the series has only very recently begun delving into.

For those wanting to get a grip on the whole story, here’s the rundown of what we know at this moment.

William and Ben have a connection that doesn’t just exist through blood. They grew up more as brothers than cousins. As a boy, William had a toy soldier that he passed on to Ben. Ben promised to keep it always in his uniform pocket for good luck. That small detail ends up serving as a major clue.

In Outlander Season 8 Episode 2, the news of Ben’s death comes to William at a time when he has been drinking and struggling to work out his identity. It comes at a time when he is already dealing with the death of Jane. Another death when he has just lost everything else.

But grief leads to suspicion in Outlander Season 8 Episode 2. William visits the camp where Ben was imprisoned to collect his belongings. Everyone is casual about moving on from it, and no one cares to discuss the specifics. And that bugs him. Soldiers are killed every day in wartime. Why is this one being so easily ignored?

He talks to a soldier close to Ben. He tells William that Ben was getting much better. Then, without warning, he was dead and buried, before anyone had actually been able to see the body properly. William searches through Ben’s belongings looking for the toy soldier. It is not there. William is aware of this immediately, and a slight smile comes to his face: he already knows something is wrong.

That night in Outlander Season 8 Episode 2, he digs up the grave. He looks at the face of the person buried there and says, “Thank Christ”. It’s not his cousin.

Benjamin Grey is the eldest son of Hal Grey, Duke of Pardloe, and so the nephew of Lord John Grey. He has been a part of the Outlanders storyline for a few seasons now.

Ben has a family of his own as well. Amaranthus Cowden, a woman who writes to Hal Grey, says she is Ben’s wife and the mother of his infant son, Trevor. William had promised to care for her and his child. Now with Ben still alive, it all means something very different.

What does the fake grave mean in Outlander Season 8 Episode 2?

Here’s where it gets even more confusing. It’s not just that Ben is missing as of Outlander Season 8 Episode 2. It’s that somebody has gone to the effort of burying somebody else’s body. If there’s another body in the grave, it means the scheme was afoot before it was declared that Ben was dead. It was no coincidence.

This implies a conspired cover-up. Someone with access and authority caused it. The probable explanation is that Ben switched sides or was taken secretly by powerful people on one side or the other who wanted the world to think he was out of the picture.

Meanwhile, William isn’t only concerned about loyalty. He is also worried that he owes it to Amaranthus after having been treated badly in the past. Finding Ben has become a matter of pride. This will probably be enough to get him through the season.

Outlander has a lot of strands to be brought together. The Ben mystery is perfect in giving William his own objective at the very moment. He is no longer just a plot device that reacts to what is happening to him. He now has his goal.

The arc also allows William to see the world through a different lens, one that might impact the direction of his own story. In a season where Jamie is haunted by a prophecy about his own death, and where the Ridge faces an increasing threat, William’s search for Ben presents a different sort of tension. It’s subdued and intimate, and it manifests in an entirely different way. No one knows where precisely Benjamin Grey is. But William Ransom is about to discover where he is.
