One Piece star Emily Rudd made a huge decision in keeping the character as accurate as possible

One Piece star Emily Rudd made sure to add this one detail to Nami’s role to keep things as accurate as possible, as the show’s costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard talked about how things went on behind the scenes to bring the show to life.

In an interview with InStyle, Barnard opened up on how the team tried to balance Eiichiro Oda’s original manga designs with the practical realities of filming action heavy scenes outdoors. Nami’s outfit during the Reverse Mountain arc quickly became a challenge, but Rudd made sure to take it.

In the manga, the character’s look features a cropped vest paired with a short skirt but because filming took place in the middle of winter, the costume department adjusted some elements of the outfit to help Rudd stay warm. Long sleeves were added beneath the vest so the actor could comfortably perform physically demanding scenes, but one part of her outfit remained unchanged: the skirt.

Speaking to th outlet, the costume designer spoke of Rudd and stated,

“In the manga, it is a vest, but because she has a lot of action and we were shooting in the dead of winter and we wanted to keep our dear Emily warm, we were able to add long sleeves to this look. She was already having to do all that action in a teeny tiny little skirt. She knew it was going to be cold, but like she said to me, she said, ‘This is for the fans. I want to get this as correct as possible’ and she was really, really badass about it because it really was cold.”

With Season 2 already generating strong reactions from early viewers, Rudd’s dedication to portraying Nami faithfully adds another layer of excitement for fans. The show is currently streaming on Netflix, where it has opened to positive reviews.
