Bishop: Jennifer Jason Leigh nabs a role in Bishop, an upcoming series from Dexter: Resurrection creator

Amazon MGM Studios has included Jennifer Jason Leigh in the brand-new crime thriller series, Bishop. Tony Saltzman is the co-creator of the show, who also created Dexter: Resurrection. Joel Kinnaman has been cast to play the eponymous protagonist Bishop Graves while John Malkovich will play Bishop’s father Lincoln Graves in the series.

At the center of the family drama will be Leigh who will portray the character of Jillian Graves, the sister of Lincoln and the aunt of Bishop. With a combination of crime, power and family tension, the series is aiming to be one of the most interesting forthcoming cop thrillers on television.

Jennifer Jason Leigh steps into a key family role in Bishop

In Bishop, Jennifer Jason Leigh has been announced to star as Jillian Graves, the sister of John Malkovich’s character Lincoln Graves and aunt to Bishop Graves, portrayed by Joel Kinnaman. This makes her the heart of the story’s personal conflicts and alliances.

Although the series is a cop thriller, these family relations assure that the show will be more than just a police procedural. The emotional tensions in the show might be fueled by the relationships that Jillian shares with her brother and nephew, or the relationships each of them share with other characters yet to be cast.

Leigh has been noted for portraying complex and unpredictable characters in the past (The Hateful Eight) and she will fit the role well. The presence of Malkovich and Kinnaman is also not in vain: the roles of these characters weigh a lot and their interactions on screen may turn into one of the most intriguing aspects about the series.

The creative team behind the show

Bishop is the brainchild of two talented creative heads Little Marvin and Tony Saltzman acting as co-creators for the series. They both have experience in working within the crime-drama genre which indicates that the show might incorporate elements of suspense, psychological tension and dark narratives.

The contributions of Saltzman in the Dexter universe provide an indication that the series may feature morally ambiguous characters instead of it being limited to just solving crimes. In case the series in the making is also written in a similar key, it can go even deeper into the motives and internal struggles of the characters.

The logline for Bishop reads:

“Homicide detective Bishop Graves (Kinnaman) – brilliant, battle-scarred – will put all of his skills to the test in the hunt for an elusive killer targeting San Francisco’s moneyed class. As this increasingly audacious killer develops a devoted following among the city’s powerless, Bishop becomes convinced these murders connect back to SF’s most powerful man, his own father, Lincoln Graves.”

Amazon MGM Studios is producing the series for Prime Video, as the platform still invests in big-budget scripted dramas. With its focus on the Graves family, a suspense-driven creative team, and the addition of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bishop is shaping up to be a crime drama worth keeping an eye on.
