Essence Festival 2026 lineup is all about the women

Cardi B, Patti LaBelle, Kehlani, Latto, and Brandy and Monica headline the first wave of performers for the July concert series in New Orleans

The Essence Festival of Culture has made its first major move for 2026, and the message is clear from the start. Timed to Women’s History Month, the festival announced its opening wave of performers for the Evening Concert Series, scheduled for July 3 through 5 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The initial lineup features Cardi B, Patti LaBelle, Kehlani, Latto, and the long-anticipated pairing of Brandy and Monica.

An announcement timed with intention

Dropping the lineup during Women’s History Month was not accidental. The Essence Festival has built its identity around celebrating Black women in culture, music, and business, and this year’s first announcement reflects that commitment directly. All five acts span generations and genres, from Southern rap to classic soul to contemporary R&B, covering ground that few single weekends could reasonably claim to hold.

Cardi B and Latto will each be making their Essence Festival debuts. Cardi B, who was born in the Bronx and has become one of the most commercially successful and culturally influential women in hip-hop history, brings a career defined by chart dominance and an unfiltered public presence that has resonated across Black communities nationwide. Latto, who emerged from Atlanta and built a multi-platinum catalog while establishing herself as one of the sharpest voices in contemporary rap, represents a newer generation of women in the genre who operate without apology and without ceiling.

Kehlani, Brandy and Monica bring R&B weight

Kehlani arrives at the festival on the back of one of her strongest stretches yet. Her single “Folded,” released in 2025, reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song at the 68th Grammy Awards. The Oakland-born singer has spent years building a fanbase through emotionally direct songwriting and an independent creative spirit, and her Essence set will likely reflect both her catalog depth and new material expected later this year.

The reunion of Brandy and Monica carries its own weight entirely. Two of the most technically accomplished vocalists in R&B history, both former Essence magazine cover stars, their return to the Superdome stage together is the kind of moment that does not need much framing. Their individual careers have each stretched across decades of reinvention, and together they represent a chapter of Black music that audiences have never stopped returning to.

Patti LaBelle anchors the lineup

Patti LaBelle closes out the first announcement as the undeniable anchor. A North Philadelphia native who has spent more than six decades in music, she carries with her a legacy that extends well beyond awards or chart positions. LaBelle performing at the Caesars Superdome in July will mean something different to different people, but for anyone who grew up in Philadelphia or in the broader tradition of Black American music, it registers as more than a festival booking.

LaBelle is also scheduled to perform in New Orleans in May alongside Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Stephanie Mills, making her summer a particularly full one in the city.

Beyond the main stage

The festival’s programming at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center returns alongside the concert series. That includes panel discussions and talks featuring authors, entrepreneurs, and cultural figures, as well as a beauty market, film screenings, and a food and wine component. The Convention Center programming has long been a draw for attendees who come to New Orleans for the full cultural experience, not just the Superdome nights.

Organizers have noted that additional performers will be announced in the months ahead as the July dates approach. The Essence Festival still carries unresolved financial history with the Convention Center, with reports earlier this year indicating more than $400,000 owed from the 2025 event. Sundial Media Group, the festival’s owner, has since announced that agreements are in place to settle all outstanding contractor payments. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
