The psychedelic rock singer Country Joe McDonald has passed away at the age of 84. According to TMZ, the frontman of the Country Joe and the Fish rock band died on Saturday. The details surrounding Country Joe McDonald’s death remain unclear. However, The Sun reported that the singer died due to complications from Parkinson’s. The outlet quoted a statement from the singer’s discontinued group that read:
“We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Country Joe McDonald, who died yesterday, March 7th, at the age of 84, in Berkeley, California. He was surrounded by family.”
The psychedelic rock artist is survived by his five children and his wife, Kathy Wright. Country Joe McDonald has been married four times in his life. His first wife was Kathe Werrum. His second wife was Robin Menken, with whom he shared a daughter, Anne. McDonald later married Janice Taylor, with whom he shared a son and a daughter, Devin and Tara. He was then married to Wright and shared another son and daughter, Ryan and Emily. In addition to that, McDonald also dated popular female rock icon Janis Joplin and wrote a song titled, Janis.
Born in 1942 as Joseph Allen McDonald, the vocalist became a prominent counterculture figure. He was known for his anti-Vietnam War stance. The rock artist gave the popular anti-Vietnam War anthem I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag. He famously led an anti-Vietnam War protest performance at the historic Woodstock Festival in 1969.

“McDonald was widely recognized as one of the defining voices of the 1960s counterculture movement. His music blended folk, rock, and political commentary, capturing the spirit of a generation deeply affected by social upheaval, civil rights struggles, and the Vietnam War.”

According to Deadline, after moving to Berkeley to become a musician, McDonald became associated with the Free Speech Movement. He also started a music magazine, Rag Baby. In 1965, the rock musician co-founded a band with Barry ‘The Fish’ Melton, which came to be known as Country Joe & The Fish. Two years later, the group released its debut album, Electric Music for the Mind and Body. The group gave five albums before disbanding in 1970.
Country Joe McDonald then pursued a long solo career and released over 50 albums. He also did a few acting gigs.
