Why did Britney Spears and Jason Alexander divorce? Split explored as former husband defends singer amid DUI arrest

As per a recent article by US Weekly, Jason Alexander defends ex-wife, pop sensation Britney Spears, after her DUI arrest.

Britney Spears was taken into police custody on March 4, 2026, for driving under the influence near her home in Ventura County, California. This happened after a hospital report confirmed the blood alcohol content of her blood.

Jason Alexander and Britney Spears got married in Sin City, Las Vegas, in 2004. However, the marriage was annulled only after 55 hours of marriage registration.

Jason Alexander comes up to Britney Spears’ defense and says via Instagram on March 5, 2026. In his Instagram post, Alexander urged everyone to slow down while mentioning Britney’s recent DUI arrest. Alexander wrote:

“She blew a.06, which is below the legal limit in most states, if the stories are true. And the story is entirely altered if the only drugs in her bloodstream were prescription drugs.”

Spears’ Black BMW was allegedly “speeding” and “in and out of lanes,” according to 911 dispatch audio that Us Weekly was able to get. The car was observed “braking, swerving, and driving with no taillight,” according to the operator. Before stopping it, officers could be heard watching the footage.

Britney Spears’ childhood pal Alexander, whom he married while intoxicated in Las Vegas before the union was swiftly dissolved, cautioned that rumors about Spears’ DUI arrest could “spiral out of control.” He went on:

“Rumors spread faster than facts, and suddenly someone is being judged before the truth is even clear. Britney Spears deserves the same thing anyone else does: facts, fairness, and due process.”

Jason Alexander revealed he did not want the marriage to end

Jason Alexander opened up to US Weekly in July 2021 that he did not want the marriage to end and that Britney’s team put pressure on him to go for an annulment.

During an episode of Toxic: The Britney Spears Story podcast, Alexander claimed that the singer’s staff forced him to sign papers ending the marriage but permitting him to continue dating Britney Spears. He said:

“They told me if I would sign the contracts – the annulment – they would let me and Britney continue our relationship, and if we felt the same way in six months they would give us a proper marriage.” He added that he continued to communicate with the Lucky singer following the dissolution of their marriage.

Alexander continued:

“So I had no reason to believe otherwise…I thought that’s what the truth was. They were allowing Britney and I to still have phone communication. So we were talking every day and I still believed the story I was told, that they were going to let us continue to talk and then we would have this marriage … in the future if we felt the same way.”

The Grammy winner and Alexander have remained in contact since their annulment, Alexander told Us Weekly.

In August 2020, at a #FreeBritney demonstration in Los Angeles, he remarked:

“We stay in contact pretty regularly in the last few months. It was probably the last time via text message last night.”

A representative told US Weekly that Britney’s arrest is unfortunate and an incident not to be forgiven.
