The first trailer for DCU’s Lanterns has surfaced online hours ahead of it’s official release, and fans are already freaking out at all the new details of the highly anticipated show. Although it was all set to debut the following day, the trailer appeared early on YouTube and spread through social media quickly. Although reactions to the trailer are mixed, it’s a big event for fans of the studio.
The series has been described as a story that blends superhero elements and a darker crime narrative that frames its story around a murder investigation taking place in the American heartland. It follows Green Lantern veteran Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they work together to solve a mysterious case on Earth.
The footage fans have seen puts a strong emphasis on the investigative arc of the show, something that highlights the partnership between the two characters. Although some fans have talked about being disappointed that the trailer has little to offer in terms of the franchise’s sci-fi elements, the excitement is still on. Except for a brief moment showing Hal Jordan taking flight and a shot of a Green Lantern power battery, the teaser does not prominently feature the ring’s abilities or large-scale cosmic visuals typically associated with the characters.
Speaking about the show, showrunner Ted Mundy has previously stated,
“Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins? That push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you’re yelling and screaming.”
He further added how it aims to balance John’s different sides as he continued,
“That’s what we’re trying to convey: He knows he belongs, so he doesn’t have to overcompensate. There’s a real balance there that’s just innately inside of Aaron. He’s big. He’s an intimidating presence just physically. But there’s a softness to him, too. There’s a thoughtfulness. You can’t teach that.”
