Why did Pink split with her husband in 2008? Relationship struggles explored as singer shuts down divorce rumors

On February 26, American singer-songwriter Pink (also P!nk), whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore-Hart, criticized outlets including Us Weekly and PEOPLE for reporting that she had separated from her husband and motocross racer Carey Hart after two decades of marriage.

She took to Instagram and shared in a video:

“I was just alerted to the fact that I am separated from my husband. I didn’t know. Thank you, People Magazine, thank you, Us Weekly, thank you for letting me know. I was wondering, would you also like to tell our children? Our 14-year-old and 9-year-old are also unaware.”

Pink, 46, continued by asking the publications whether they want to “talk about some real news” such as the Epstein Files, systematic racism, misogyny in sports, or “how classy the women’s hockey team is.”

The Grammy winner asked why the media wasn’t focusing more on the fact that a dozen medals won by Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics were by women.

“Or do you wanna maybe talk about the fact that I got nominated, the first year I was eligible, for the Rock N’ Roll motherf**king Hall of Fame. Do you wanna talk about my accomplishments, or do you wanna talk about my supposed demise? So, fake news, not true, f**king hate that term, umm, I love you all, go with God, and trash news, you can do better…” Pink concluded.

It is noteworthy that Pink and Carey Hart briefly separated in February 2008. At the time, the couple did not provide a reason. However, she clarified there was no infidelity or negative emotions involved.

“The most important thing for you all to know is that Carey and I love each other so, so much. This breakup is not about cheating, anger, or fighting. I know it sounds like a cliché, but we are best friends, and we will continue to be,” P!nk said back then.

Meanwhile, TMZ reported that the couple’s respective careers got in the way.

Pink and Hart, 50, reconciled in April 2009 and have been together ever since. They share two children.

Exploring Pink and Carey Hart’s relationship struggles

Pink met Carey Hart during the Summer X Games in Philadelphia in 2001. She told USA Today in 2012 that she was attracted to the motocross racer due to his bad-boy personality. However, the excitement soon wore off, and they went their separate ways in 2003. After a year, they reconciled.

Pink famously proposed to Hart mid-race while he was taking a lap during the Pro 250 class final race in California in June 2005.

They finally tied the knot at a beach ceremony at the Four Seasons resort in Costa Rica in January 2006, in the presence of over 100 guests. She later described the wedding as “fun and non-traditional” during an interview with PEOPLE.

“We’re spiritual, but we’re not religious. It was about being with our closest friends and family and having a very fun and loose party,” she explained.

Two years into the marriage, the pair announced their temporary separation. Back then, the singer’s representative told the Associated Press:

“This decision was made by best friends with a huge amount of love and respect for one another. While the marriage is over, their friendship has never been stronger.”

P!nk for her part shared via social media:

“All I know at this point is that I want to make the best album I can, and Carey wants to do the best possible job he can with everything he has going on… He is a good man, so please support him as well. One never knows the future, but mine and Carey’s just might involve beach babies and sunshine one day. Just not right now. Thanks for the concern and caring. X Miss P.”

Interestingly, despite their split, Carey Hart appeared in the October 2009 music video of his wife’s 2008 single, So What, which had the lyrics:

“Guess I just lost my husband / I don’t know where he went / So I’m gonna drink my money / I’m not gonna pay his rent.”

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in October 2023, Pink explained that the song was “part of what got Carey and me back together.”

The couple reconciled after a year. Carey Hart told PEOPLE in April 2009:

“We’re rebuilding. Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps backwards to move forward.”

Meanwhile, Pink told Redbook in June 2013 that they got back together as they weren’t “done.”

The pair welcomed their firstborn, daughter Willow, in June 2011. Their son, Jameson, arrived in December 2016.

During her May 2016 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, P!nk joked:

“We take breaks. We’ve had two breaks. The first one was about a year, and the second one was 11 months. We’re due.”

It is noteworthy that Pink has credited couples therapy as the only way she and her husband sustained their marriage for over two decades. In fact, she told Today’s Carson Daly in April 2019 that they have been in counselling “almost our entire 17 years that we’ve been together.”

“It’s the only reason we’re still together… He speaks Polish, I speak Italian, and she [the therapist] speaks both. We don’t speak the same language. We come from broken families, and we had no model of ‘How are we supposed to keep this family together and live this crazy life?’ And there’s no book that says, ‘Here’s how to do this.’ So we go to counseling, and it works,” P!nk explained.

The musician doubled down on couples therapy as the secret behind her lasting marriage during a June 2020 Instagram livestream with life coach Vanessa Inn. She even gave Inn a shoutout for “translating” her husband’s language and emotions to her for the “last 18 years.” Pink said she wouldn’t be with Hart if not for Vanessa’s continued guidance as they were neither taught as kids how to sustain relationships nor how to get along with people.

While Carey Hart maintains a low profile and only makes occasional red-carpet/ public appearances with his wife, he has appeared in several music videos of Pink, including 90 Days, Just Like Fire, Just Give Me a Reason, and True Love.

Carey and their two children also appeared on the 2021 Amazon Prime Video documentary, Pink: All I Know So Far, which further provided an insight into their marriage.

Over the years, Pink has reflected on the ups and downs in her relationship. For instance, in September 2020, she took to Instagram and shared:

“Marriage is awful, wonderful, comfort and rage. It is boring, terrifying, and a total nail-biter… Therapy isn’t for weak people… It’s for broken people who want to be whole. It’s for runaways who want a family. It’s a lesson on how to sit down and listen. How to love yourself so that the other person can, too. I love you, babe. I’m grateful we made it to this photo.”

Before that, P!nk told The Guardian in 2017 that monogamy is “work” and they “do the work.” She also shared with PEOPLE in 2021 that “long-term relationships are hard.” Two years later, she added, “He and I are independent to a fault,” and credited it as a reason behind their lasting romance.

Meanwhile, Carey Hart told Kelly Clarkson on the latter’s eponymous show in 2023 that his “very thick skin” was a factor in the long-running marriage. He also mentioned that “very little affects me” when asked about Pink’s songs about him and their roller-coaster marriage.

According to The Blast, Pink and Carey Hart were last seen together in New York City in September 2025. At the time, they reportedly didn’t have their wedding rings on.

Meanwhile, the musician shut down the separation rumors and wrote in her Instagram caption:

“Like I always say, if you don’t hear it from me, don’t believe the hype. Stay tuned, though. Who knows what could happen next?”

The reports about their alleged split came a month after the singer-songwriter didn’t celebrate their wedding anniversary on social media, unlike last year.

Carey Hart has yet to address the rumors.
