Diane Von Furstenberg is speaking out for the first time after husband Barry Diller‘s coming out.
Earlier this year, the 83-year-old billionaire businessman – who has been married to the 78-year-old fashion designer since 2001 – publicly came out as gay in an essay where he talked about dating men before his romance with Diane.
In a new interview, Diane was asked about Barry‘s sexuality.
Keep reading to find out more…While speaking to Variety, Diane emphasized that her dynamic with Barry hasn’t changed after his coming out.
“What’s the difference?” Diane said. “I don’t understand. But it doesn’t change anything. I’m sorry—it’s a stupid question.”
She also acknowledged her three-year marriage with Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, who opened up about his own bisexuality after their separation in 1972, though their divorce wasn’t finalized until 1983.
“I married two gay men, OK?” Diane continued. “I don’t know why, but to me, they’re not gay, so it doesn’t make any difference.”
She went on to say that she doesn’t see standing by Barry as “supporting him” through something.
“People see it that way,” Diane explained. “For me, it’s not that way. I don’t know. Yes, I encouraged him to do that book.”
She also insisted that Barry‘s Who Knew memoir, which was released in March 2025, was not meant to be defined by his coming out.
“For me, the book is not about that,” Diane explained. “It’s about his life. And of course, with me, he opened immediately. For 50 years, I was the only person he opened to. Then he wrote the book.”
Diane went on to admit that at first, she didn’t think her relationship with Barry all those decades ago would turn romantic.
“He turned out to be my soulmate. I didn’t think of it at first,” she confessed. “I was interested in being a good friend; I never thought it would be anything else. Then it turned to passion. He was very insistent.”
